Neighbor has a maybe 2'x4' solar looking device on the south side of his roof. Assuming this is some sort of water heater pre-heater or something?
Care to talk about those or what it could be?

Either a sunlight or a small wattage panel if I had to guess. I've put in the small single remote panels for attic fans before.
Mst hot water collectors are a little larger.
Kids are getting home fellas, I'll check later to see if anyone else has a question. Other than that, I'm ignorant starting tomorrow

Would solar make sense for me? I don't use much electricity

Just jogged by it this afternoon. Definitely not a sunlight. 2 banks of 3 panels that are about 1'x2' each. I guess it's just a small array.

Agree.
I looked into solar, but didn't like how it affects the integrity of the roof system. I spent the money on foam amd high-SEER AC systems.
Would consider it at my office.

You would be a great battery candidate. You could knock that bill out completely and keep your bare essentials running after a storm.

You don't even void roof warranties when you install it properly fwiw. But I definately understand that line of thought.
Businesses don't usually see the same rate of returns unless they have high water consumption, or are paying peak prices (double rate) from 12-2 daily.

Ahhh gotcha. That sounds like the kit sold at harbor freight. 3 15 watt panels. Charging a small battery or something probably.

Big, I know a guy that just asked me about getting into this as an installer/contractor. He's a carpenter and welder and just has an excellent overall skillset for this kind of work.
Can a guy like that make good money?

Probably if he got into the field a few years ago or lives in Cali or Florida or something. The utilities are starting to shut down net metering and I personally have a/c to fall back on.

He would have to do other things as well.
..and don't fall for the local guys who try to squeeze you for $25,000 (rebates are capped at 25K value.. You get 80% back) on 7KW systems.
Most people with connections can get panels for $0.80/watt or less.
52 250W panels will cost $10.4k and the micro inverters run about $130 each depending on which manufacturer you go with; enphase or the others.
If you pole mounted the trackers and have passive trackers, you could squeeze 10-15% more out vs a standard 30* fixed/roof mounted design. You can also adjust the rack inclination to improve output during the winter months as well.
Microinverters are throwing out ridiculous warranties now so it's the best option for residential systems over a large central inverter.

7kW for 25k was my price a few years back. Everyone else was doing 4-5 kW.
Today, I certainly do have more than just a standard system, but I'd be a damn fool to just tell all of my secrets

General range from 15-30k depends on if you want a Kia or a Cadillac.
