Would anyone disagree that these two are inverse to one another?

No, but technology that empowers ever increasing levels of communication allows for an easier display of the lesser intelligences.
The more expensive and difficult it was to transmit ideas, the fewer ideas were transmitted over long distances. Prior to the printing press's invention, all messages had to be inscribed or carved by hand. This meant that only the ideas that were considered to be particularly profound were going to be worth the effort to record them and share them.
As technology improved, the amount of time, money, and effort required to share ideas over long distances exponentially declined. Just look at the radio. We could now share the daily news as well as music instantly. Then, came television, creating a greater need for acted fiction. However, it was still an expensive thing to buy air time or produce one's own TV show.
Now, we have the internet and computers. It takes mere seconds to type and transmit messages to half the people on the entire planet. Rather than the only ideas being transmitted being written histories of a country, their religious writings, and great philosophies, it is what people ate for breakfast, look what stupid thing I can do, and I can't believe SHE wore THAT dress. It is so easy to share anything, that people share everything.
Since sharing is no longer reserved for those with means, ability, and important things to say, the idiots now have a larger voice than ever before. People aren't becoming dumber or more crass, it's just that the dumb and crass people among us are now able to be heard louder than ever before.

Biggiez.
Has to be someone with that name in existence.

Seen the movie about 5 times, first I've noticed it as well.

The ease of use of technology these days just magnifies the lack of intelligence that's long been around.

THIS
As stated in another thread the average American reads on a 3-5th grade level. Only 30% of Louisianaians go to college and even less graduate. Ignorance is everywhere and always has been. Technology has put it on display

I have a hard time believing people have always been this dumb. Its frankly really humbling if true lol. Should I feel smart?

I believe the people on the left side of the intelligence and socioeconomic distribution are dumber than ever. Sure, they are more visible and I get that, but they are dumb and proud.
