The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office left a post on its Facebook Tuesday promoting the $1 raffle, with the grand prize being an adorable, fluffy black pup.

According to the post, which has since been taken down, the winner of the draw scheduled for the last day of the Cleveland County Fair was also to receive a 10x10 kennel and a dog house.

Outraged Facebook users wasted no time going on the offensive against the sheriff's office, with the original post drawing more than 6,000 overwhelmingly negative comments lambasting the stunt as inhumane and unethical on every level.

‘ARE YOU KIDDING??? Why not raffle a small child? You are assuming the the [sic] raffle winner will provide a good loving home,' one incensed critic fumed.

Others called out the organizers of the raffle for acting irresponsibly, reminding them that the pooch could easily end up in the wrong hands.

'A dog is a living breathing creature who will need a lifetime of care, not an object to be sold like a slave to the highest bidder,' one comment read.

Facebook user Kelly Bonelli sounded a similar note in her post: 'Poor baby is going to end up hurt neglected or worse. What's wrong with you people down there??'

'Dogs are a big responsibility...not just something you win in a raffle,' commenter Susan McKinney Barrett declared.

They did it for 12 years, Geesh. People are pathetic.

They released a statement via FB:
quote:

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office has cancelled the raffle for the German shepherd puppy that was going to be raffled at the Cleveland County Fair. Our original post did not state that in the past years we have required the person that won the drawing to be subjected to Cleveland County’s Animal Adoption Policy. Due to the overwhelming outcry we have teamed with a reputable 501.C3 animal rescue that has agreed to help in finding a suitable owner for this puppy. The animal rescue is also in discussion with Highland K-9 in Iredell County to provide training for the puppy. The Sheriff’s Office will be looking into other fundraising projects to help support our K-9 program. If you purchased tickets you will be contacted and your money will be refunded. If you would like to make a donation to our K-9 program you can contact Amy Miller @ Millerame@gmail.com. Amy Miller is also the contact for the animal rescue.

I like how everyone just assumes that the dog will instantly be met with torture and abuse.

Of course. We love us some good overreaction and doom and gloom.

WTF?

Why do people fold to these social media whackos?

If I was the in charge of the raffle, I'd say,

"If you want to personally ensure this pup's safety, then buy yourself some tickets. If not, kindly go piss up a rope."

Well, at a dollar a throw at a county fair, I think the chances are better than even that the dog goes to a shitty owner. I'm with the SJW's on this one.

This is exactly why the loudmouths and whiners keep doing it - because people give in.

If we would ignore these people, they might go away.

Why would people who didn't want the dog enter the raffle?

Are we supposed to have social workers check out all prospective dog owners now?
