.89 a gallon
I lived in metro Atlanta between '95 and '02.
I remember gas being .89/gallon (and less) there. However, I don't remember what exact year it was that cheap.

horseshite. I choose to be in a field that's stable. Could I jump ship to the other side and get a 50% raise? Sure, but I'd prob have to take a major pay cut or be unemployed at some point in my career. Don't blame anyone for doing so but those people have to properly plan and don't cry for help when the ball stops bouncing their way.

Why is it that no other industry bitches about the market price for their products? Louisiana residents are getting arse raped on the price of milk at around $3.75-5.00 for a gallon of cow lactation. It's cheap and easy to extract, yet you are paying more per gallon for that shite than dinosaur juice from millions of years ago.
So you're questioning why no one bitches about the ridiculous price of cow's milk in LA, and then you say this:

But to answer the question, I'd be fine with gas being free. Along with the auto industry, O&G is the only other industry where I've seen the employees bitch this much about a declining market.
Huh? So you're upset that employees bitch about the price of oil, but you're also upset that milk costs a lot in LA.
I don't really know what side of the argument you're on, but don't be mistaken, EVERYONE bitches about the price of oil when it is high.

As someone who works in the field, I want to to be whatever it is, but just stay there. Be consistent. High prices force us to make hires and raise salaries since you're doing twice the workload. Crashes make you clear house. Market dictates pricing, but crazy swings don't allow enough time for a correction without massive casualties to people's way of life.

Good to know. Actually, using December 2015 dollars, the inflation-adjusted average price of gasoline since 1918 is $2.64. The lowest inflation adjusted average price was in 1998 @ $1.48/gallon. The highest inflation adjusted price was $3.92/gallon in 1918. Today's national average is $1.73 according to AAA.
If you consider the historical national average as reasonable, we're 35% below that average right now. To put it another way, gas prices would need to climb more than 52% to get to their historical national average.

Billdance. I kinda hope I get fired, then I'll take your job.

I'm content with the $1.29 I paid at Costco yesterday.

I would really love to see someone who dislikes the idea of minimum wage being $10-$15 explain to me why they also think gas prices should be higher
Posted on 2/26/16 at 2:31 pm to efrad
They shouldn't be higher.....right now. Lot of players flooded the market to get that 80/bbl money. But, these layoffs around the globe will lead to a "shortage" at some point which is going to mean high er prices again. That's my problem with the oilfield. It's a commodity that lends itself to severe yo-yo-ing in price. I wish it could settle at 45-50 a barrel and gas would be 2 bucks. I don't think that to save jobs, but to even out the pricing fluctuation.

Is this some sort of gotcha question? Most in O&G understand the price is determined by the free-ish market, regardless of whether that price is high or low.
People who would like to see it higher for their own wellbeing or the wellbeing of their local community aren't asking for it to be artificially higher.
