I think they should be higher when demand catches up with supply and there's no long a surplus.

Since 1918, the inflation-adjusted historical average for gasoline is $2.64/gallon.

Since 1946, the inflation-adjusted historical average for oil is $41.78/barrel. Since 1980 that number is $53.08/barrel. Since 2000 it is $63.57/barrel.

You're in the ballpark on the oil price but that would still be very cheap for gas, historically speaking.
