The thing is, people tip.. And tip big. This was years ago. Someone asked me if I would take care of the drinks at a wedding. As in find a few people to serve drinks, keep track of the drinks so that everything not used could be returned, etc. They gave me a budget to pay the people I got to work it, to use if there were certain things we might have needed, etc.
It was a pretty big wedding so one of the people I asked to work found a jar, put tips on it and just put it up. I was thinking "no one is going to tip. Its free drinks so its not like they will be buying something and then have change they just give as a tip". I was wrong.
And the later we got into the reception, the more people tipped. One of the people I got to work ended up getting hammered and I had to pull someone else in to pay to help clean up shite, but before the drunk dude was near passing out he started handing people bottles of wine. He gave away like 4 or 5 before I even noticed, but evidently those people were very thankful. There were $20s in there and by the end of the night, a tip jar where people went to get free drinks had over $300.
This was over 4+ hrs, but there were people who would tip $1 every time they came get a drink. Some old dude put in a quarter every time he got a drink (this was years ago).
Some guy brought his own Crown Royal, gave me a $50 tip to his drink ready every 20 mins. As soon as he came get a drink, I had someone set their watch for 15 mins to fix his drink (he showed me on a plastic cup how much crown he wanted poured in topped with coke and not much ice), At 15 mins, I told them to fix it, put two small pieces of ice and put it in the freezer. When he came for his drink it was right there in the freezer good and cold.
At the end of the night, he gave me another $50 for taking care of it. So people will absolutely tip when they don't have to. So if people want to give away their money, then why not give them the option? Personally, I only tip where its necessary.. At restaurants. But if people are willing god bless em.

Hopefully you didn't pay for the gear and instead just gave them the tip.

they wouldn't do it if people pushed back and rejected the tip.
That would be true if we lived in normal times. But we now live in "bizarro world" so nothing is normal anymore. Since it's become normal to add the optional tip to one's order, they'll just continue adding it, no matter how stupid we think it is or how much we push back. Since there's no extra expense on their end to add the optional tip, any tip they get will be gravy.

Dude do you snort a big arse line of coke and become really talkative before you make posts like that? Dude wrote a whole book in a thread about tips.

I always manually enter $0.01 and say “just the tip” as I submit.
