Too many years of loud music and driving with the car window down. I think my years of driving a soft top Jeep Wrangler was the final straw. I will eventually have to consider a hearing aide. Do any of them actually work? Everyone I've ever asked that has one says they don't really do much. You would think science and technology would have come up with a prettty good hearing aide by now. Probably not too many people on this board old enough to have hearing loss yet, but curious as to any experience with them.

I have a couple of relatives that have them and once they are fitted and working correctly, they work like a damn charm. however, they are not something that you just buy and stick in your ear and all of your problems are solved. you have to have them fitted and adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing. likely takes a number of iterations to get that done.

51. You don't lose volume, it's certain frequencies that you begin to quit hearing. Pretty soon your stereo will begin to sound like the quality of a drive through speaker and you think people mumbling.

My dad lost his hearing for high pitched noises at like 35. Claimed it was from shooting guns with no hearing protection in the 50s-60s.
The damn oven timer could be going off right next to him and he couldn't hear it. Or maybe he was just waiting for my mom to get it. Either way it was a good strategy

yep...we generally lose the high pitched stuff first. that is why they have to tune a hearing aid...so that it only amplifies the frequencies where your hearing is deficient.

Yeah they work to a degree.
Hearing aids make things louder but not necessarily clearer. Most of the complaints regard the clarity. Technology for hearing aids has come a long ways. Nowadays they don't just amplify every sound. They can be programmed to amplify certain frequencies and are better at filtering background noise.
At the end of the day though, you can turn up the volume on a shitty speaker, and it's still a shitty speaker even if you have a $3000 amplifier hooked to it.

I have a genetic condition that caused me to lose my hearing in my mid to late 20's so I have to wear hearing aids in both ears. To answer your questions, yes they work. I wouldn't be able to hear much of anything without them. Best thing for you to do is find a good audiologist and get advice from them. They are expensive and few insurance companies cover the costs and those that do usually only cover a small percentage. I wouldn't go with the cheap ones nor the most expensive. They take some getting used to and are pretty uncomfortable but once you do then they are pretty much second nature. I'm not sure where you are located but If in the Baton Rouge area, I have had pretty good experience with Audibel. Being young and not comfortable with the appearance of them, I got what they call completely in the ear hearing aides. They are not real obvious and most people can't tell that I have them on. Anyways good luck and I hope that I have helped.

I've definitely lost some hearing from earbuds, blasting music in the car, and two years sleeping right under the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
Most of what people say is bullshite, though, so take it as a mixed blessing.
