Will drones ever be able to defeat the top weapon in the navy?

I'm sure that question will be answered in the upcoming Terminator movie

According to some on here, if they're Russian drones, we're screwed.

The US Navy would shoot them out of the sky with sharks with fricking laser beams attached to their heads.

Or just lasers fired from ships in the group. LINK

The US navy demonstrated its new 30-kilowatt laser weapon system in the Persian Gulf, near Iranian waters. The device, which is 30 million times more powerful than a laser pointer, is capable of targeting mounted weapons systems on fast-moving boats, and destroying drones in mid-flight. According to the navy, a much more powerful 150 kilowatt system is currently in development

I can see a swarm of tens of thousands of small armed drones being a reallll big problem for just about anything.

Also, I feel that at the point where this could be a weapon of war, there would be a weapon developed to combat that. Something like targeted EMP, hacking software, super shotguns.

targeted EMP

That would work well against a swarm.

But easily out maneuverable if swarm used effectively.

This is how I used to win at Red Alert, just tons of small tanks continuous flow at the enemy.

Depends if radar can detect them. If they're small, have stealth characteristics, and come in low they may go undetected.

edt: Of course if they're too small, they probably won't do much damage. The real concern is applying stealth tech to drone tech.

Keep in mind they'd have to be big enough to actually carry a payload capable of hurting a massive, armored seas-going ship. For example, the U.S. made Harpoon anti-ship missile weighs a little over 1,500 lbs.

The current top performing drone used by the US, the MQ-9 Reaper has a max armaments payload of 1,500 lbs, just under the weight of the Harpoon. And this drone is 36' long with a 65' wingspan. And on top of that, it's max speed is only 300 MPH. To give you some perspective, this top of the line drone has similar flight capabilities of a pre-WWII era fighter like this....

That's the Brewster Buffalo which was actually a little faster than the Reaper drone. It was obsolete even in the early stages of WWII. Do you think an attack of Brewster Buffalo fighters would pose a threat to a modern day U.S. carrier group? OK, there's your answer.
