Gatlingburg, TN for kids/ beginners.
Nope...Gatlinburg is where I learned to ski...then I went to visit my brother in Colorado and learned what powder was like. Gatlinburg is typically man-made. It is granular and packs like ice. It makes it a bear to get an edge. You will skid and skip before you finally turn.
Don't get me wrong...Ober Gatlinburg is a lot of fun...but not the place I would recommend learning to ski.

We took each of our kids to Winter Park for their first ski experience, it is a great place for the kiddos and is less then an hour drive from Denver airport. They have a fairly new slopeside village with restaurants and bars, but also have nights for the kiddos with Smore's, live music and other cool things to do

Yeah vail is a bigger town with an airport for half the price
Posted on 11/11/15 at 7:32 am to yellowfin

If the guy above me can make it from DIA to Winter Park in less than an hour I should be able to make it to Vail from EGE in 15 minutes

We started with our kids at 4 with half day lessons, then full day lessons at 5, both times at small local mountains near my FIL's place in South Dakota. I think it was better for them than the crowds of a big mountain and the lessons were private for the cost of group lessons at a big resort. When they are ready for the big mountains, I like the convenience of the the Salt Lake City area resorts.

There's a direct flight to salt lake city from new orleans with delta.

RIP your wallet. But I recommend Colorado, better snow and you can hit multiple mountains on the epic pass.

I've skied park city -
Deer valley a couple
Dozen times. So easy from the airport - don't need to rent a car. Great ski school at PCM and DV. For food, groomed trails, etc., DV can't be beat. Flying into Aspen is easy and only 10 mins from ASE to the town, but as a beginner, you won't want to ski Aspen, head to Snowmass and the other 2 near town.
Got to reiterate on skiing NC - conditions can be a block of ice or oatmeal - hard to learn on shite conditions, especially for the little ones.

I know PC and canyons are connected now, but does deer valley work on the same pass? specifically the epic pass.

Angel Fire NM
Southwest into Albuquerque...(cheap) as long as 14 days in advance
Slopes are cheap in off time (read after Xmas)
Family oriented...not a drunken frat party
slopes are easy
Ask me how I know...been there done that

No Epic pass for Deer Valley.

Only downside for me is more time at the airport/airplane as there are no direct flights out of BTR.
BTR - Where We Fly?
BTR only flies non-stop to:
1. IAH - Houston
2. DFW - Dallas
3. ATL - Atlanta
4. CLT - Charlotte, NC
Virtually anywhere you fly out of BTR requires a change of planes or at least a lay-over.
Living in Atlanta has spoiled me.

Park City is the answer.
Short drive from airport
From the SLC airport? Park City is one of the more out of the way resorts you can choose if distance from airport is a factor. The resorts in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are closer.
But overall, Park City is probably the best for people who come from out of town.

35 minutes to Park City ain't exactly out of the way. Surely this is a troll...
