BRBR

quote:

Earlier this month, Edwards announced a plan to move the library’s independently funded budget derived from its own property tax into the parish general fund. The move is intended to redirect some library funds to provide significant pay raises for police officers and address other priorities.

Can the Library System afford a big cut?

quote:

As part of the plan, called Revive EBR, Edwards proposed reallocating city-parish library funds to pay for drainage and road improvements, mental health services, and other initiatives. The plan would reduce the library’s annual budget from $65 million to $38 million. Edwards and his spokesperson, Falon Brown, compared the library system’s $65 million budget to the $43 million budget for the Dallas library system and the $38 million budget in Nashville.

Why are we funding a library system way bigger than these metro areas? Both are booming, we are struggling.

Libraries are good, but our spending on them seems to be way over the top.

Don’t they owe it to St. George anyway?

Do you think the poverty city of Baton Rouge is comparable to Dallas and Nashville?

"Libraries are good" is something people almost all agree on, so we have overly funded them because we have stupid politicians that just try to not rock the boat so they can get re-elected.

In general, I'm not opposed to funding SOME libraries, but that downtown one is a huge boondoogle. It's just a spot for the local street bums to watch porn and go to the bathroom.

Sid is right. This city needs to get its priorities straight. And violent crime is priority Numero Uno.

Ive said it a million times on here, the library is the biggest waste of money all counties and parishes have. It is a good place to hide funds for a rainy day, no one looks at the libraries.

You have 5-6 people making 6 figures at your libraries, one girl made 30K in overtime last year and was a marketing advertising person.

Most of this is wasteful spending.

Way overemployed.

No, the Library System. is parish wide. SG pays taxes and gets library services as ford everyone in the parish. W Ed pay property tax for that. It’s the 2% parish sales tax that is in question.

It’s what the voters have been supporting for years though when they vote for the tax renewals. The library system has supposedly been able to take on projects without incurring any debt. There is pushback on this for a reason.

Parish leaders left the Library Conttol Board act in their own and of course they felt their mission was more important than everyone else’s so they kept growing and spending.

A solid function system wasn’t the goal. They spent money on expensive structures, art and facilities where there was no real big demand.

No one dare challenge them until now. You’d be painted as a kid hater or a community hater. Until now.

This isn’t a good idea… BRPD has to many bad apples. . Sid needs to start purging in all departments from administration to those on the bottom of the totem pole… after that he should invite the feds to take over for the duration of his term while the department is rebuilt

I read an article on WBRZ where he said he was cutting 600 jobs if the voters didn’t approve the money being moved.

That’s a big mistake to approach the voters like that in my opinion.

Once brpd gets that 100 million from the library they can build a state of the art inspection sticker checkpoint

The libraries were open during the snowstorm because Sid ordered them to be opened for shelters.

If the police would write tickets for false plates, tints, erratic driving and littering, they would be self-sufficient.

We need the Krotz Springs mayor/police chief to come over here.

I'm not in favor of moving tax dollars taken for the library system and given to the Police. If the library system can survive on 50% of their budget, then those tax dollars should be returned to the taxpayer. The mayor can propose a new tax for police. But we are overtaxed as it is and shouldn't be presented.

Write everyone that sits in a left lane on a four-lane highway and we could balance the budget and have a surplus.
