I used to love pits, the second best dog I ever had was a pit. They can be good, but boy they can snap too.
My dog had two siblings that were put down for biting people.

OP: This is the one that happened this week in Fresno, California. LINK
So the dogs weren't left alone with the baby, but knowing that there was a vicious dog outside (even if it was supposed to be chained up), she left the door open?
Sad.
quote:
Fresno police chief Jerry Dyer said just after midnight Monday, the mother of the 3-day old baby girl placed her on a chair while she went to the bathroom.
"Prior to doing so had placed her child on a recliner type couch, placed pillows around the baby so that the baby wouldn't fall off," Dyer said.
He said the mother also had propped the front door open to let some air in the house, not knowing that one of the family's two dogs, which has a history of being vicious, was not chained up.

Parents kill their children more often than pits do.

The best thing I ever did, was take mine to several good sized music festivals in Nola as a puppy. Those first few months, I'd bring her anywhere she was allowed, and to the dog park 2-3 times a week. It was often a pain in the arse. But I wanted to expose her to as many strange human behaviors as I could.
Most attacks are fear based. So I wanted her to have zero fear of humans, and to not have any negative feelings towards humans, and to see all of them as a potential friend. It worked great, though I think mine had a particularly good personality. And considering she's from a shelter, I was lucky.
/rant, proceed to pit bash again.

I mean there are certainly "good" pitbulls out there that wouldnt harm a fly. There are also labs and weenies that bite. Just so happens both examples are minorities in their respective breed.
My only question is: knowing how prone they are to spontaneous attacks (even in the best of circumstances with breeding), why risk it at all? I even agree they are a beautiful breed, but I will never own one. There are so many other great breeds it just doesnt make sense to have an unnecessary potential risk around.
Btw, what you did with yours was actually a really good idea. I would have been hesitant to do that or not thought of it at all. Good on you for being an intelligent and diligent owner.

I don't care if people don't want to own them. My problem is the people that think because they don't want to own them, I shouldn't be able to own them. I've seen these types of people on this board. They think pits should be illegal to own. Pure stupidity based on fear.

I really thought this thread was about a "mix tape" by the DJ Pitbull

Does not seem to be a very intelligent choice on your part !

Well Im not that ignorant. I dont care if people own them, its not my business. Just raise them correctly and/or dont put them in situations that could cause potential harm to others. If you do, I feel the owners need to be held liable, as with any dog. And the dog needs to be euthanized.
Like I said, I think they are a beautiful breed, just not for me. Im not scared to pet them or be around them in most cases, but I would never own one.

I'd rather have a golden retriever any day.

Well, I hate breeders, and was living in New Orleans, so I was going to have to get a pit.
I'm personally skeptical about he temperament issues with spontaneous attacks. They actually score very high on the test by the American Temperament Society.
American Temperament Society data
Pitbulls scored higher than boxers, collies, German Shepards, golden retrievers, etc.
I think extreme human and animal socialization is critical for any dog bigger than 35-40 pounds. Large dogs of any breed can kill a child. And with bully breeds being notoriously stubborn, training is the much more important. But I think it's a good idea for all dogs to spend as much fine around different people as possible during their first year. It makes for a better, friendlier dog.
