I haven't spent much time there but I grew up in the Rust Belt and lived in NOLA. The "has potential" is a really sad commentary. That means that a city had it all, or could have it all, but can't get out of their own way. In the rust belt, employers would walk away from billion dollar installations because the business climate was so hostile.

And then you have Buffalo, New Orleans, Saint Louis, virtually any previously important port on the Great Lakes or Mississippi. Memphis, Louisville, Erie...

I feel the same way as an outside in Memphis. Really pretty old buildings downtown, half of them abandoned. Once the "capital of the Delta region" and now, who cares??? There is little hay to make there.

I love visiting Memphis because my friends there are fun and well connected so we can have a good time, but I wouldn't want to be Joe Working Class trying to support a family and stay safe.

Any of the cities I've named "has potential" and will never achieve it. The Doug Flutie of cities. They will never get out of their own way. It makes me sad.

state or city is almost trying to force it to decline. I know this board likes to blame everything on ‘culture’ but that shouldn’t affect these things:
It is to blame. Low taxes aren't the only thing businesses look for when start or relocate. They also don't want to deal with crime, bad schools, and have employees with at least room temperature IQ.

I will give you a pass on Demograpphics but how are the climate and topography bad compared to other cities in the Southeast and Texas?

I knew one very successful restaurant operator in another city that said he wanted to open a restaurant in Shreveport but said dealing with the city council was a nightmare.

Why would a Restaurant Operator have to go before the City Council? The City Council didn't stop any other restaurants from being a success.

I lived in shreve from 96 to 2001 and loved it. They cleaned up the city big time in early 90s when the gambling boats came in. It was a lively place with great live music everywhere then. I always felt safe and even lived downtown for a couple of my last years there in the old Lee hardware bldg. Looks like the last 20 years have gone steady downhill.

I dont know who you have been talking to but 'Progressive' is akin to a four letter word in Port City.
