The war didn't really end in 1918. The warring factions merely took a 20-year break so a new generation could be born and reach fighting age to resume the conflict anew, with the wrongs of the Treaty of Versailles were used as their rallying cry.
It was arguably part of the same conflict that began with the consolidation of Germany into a single state and the rapid industrialization of that state in the mid 19th Century. Add to that the rise of new political ideologies-Coummunism and Fascism-both of which also had their roots in the 19th Century-and the case cold be made.
For that matter, you could throw in the Cold War and even the current reawakening of nationalism in Russia and Western Europe.

No event happens in a vacuum, particularly one that has ~38 million casualties, that doesn't make each it one event.

You can look at it as a continuum of events. If Versailles wasn't so punitive, who knows if the environment exists for Hitler to rise to power.

The Hundred Years' War is thought of as one big conflict even though the major campaigns were separated by periods of peace
