And the more people smoke, the more health insurance companies are having because of the health issues caused by smoking.

The nanny state would be the least of the founding fathers worries if they were transported to today

There is some truth to that.

It amazes me that people try to argue with this. They also need to increase the taxes on it. If you want to smoke, that is fine, but you don't need to suck the system because of your poor decisions.

The problem with the system is everyone pretty much sucks it down simply by getting old. If smoking and lung cancer goes away these people will just join the millions with diabetes, heart disease, or other forms of cancer. You ban smoking, you just shift these people from one column on the spreadsheet to another.

Smoking should be legal. A good well-made cigar is true pleasure. Let the insurance companies sort out your premiums by how many times a year pork rinds go on your value card. I really couldn't care less about the insurance companies. They are rich enough as is. Pure evil, corporate fascists with death panels. #BCBS666

No, but insurance companies should be able to charge people way more (than they already do) for illness related to lifestyle choices

They should be able to charge more for fat asses too.

But to the contrary, there are plenty of people who lived past 80 with no major health issues that have smoked most of their lives. There are also people who've made great choices in live and died young for poor health reasons. Obviously, there is a direct correlation between smoking and lung cancer. I'm sure if you get lung cancer and you smoke the insurance companies probably do have a way to charge more or limit what they pay. Idk.

Age restriction never stopped smoking and it never will. Many ways to get around the restriction.

Everything should be 18.

Drinking, smoking, driving, buying sex, selling your body, marijuana, etc.

Everything. You're an adult.

The law says you're an adult. I think the bigger question here is, should we reconsider at what age are you an adult?

Personally, i think at 18 you're sort of a teenager, sort of an adult. I think everyone would agree you don't make the best choices at 18.

It is the only way to combat the ludicrous cost of healthcare.

Since a very large portion of tobacco users are also on some sort of government assistance and could not afford higher premiums, you create a separate charity system of hospitals and clinics.

As a podiatrist I deal a lot with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. I can't even count how many patients I have to do some level of amputation on, and when they come for their follow up appointment they've got a 1L coke in their hand and a pack of cigarettes in their purse. Most of these people also have either medicaid or no insurance at all.

The amount of money spent treating lifestyle-related illnesses is unfathomable, and it's only going to get worse.

No, and alcohol and gambling should be lowered to 18. None of this quasi adult shite. Either you're an adult or you're not. Make it all 18 or all 21.

then dont smoke cigs. If someone were to have this approach about alcohol, a mob is coming at you with shanks.

Edit: I may or may not be part of the mob. But I wont not be part of it.

Tobacco should be banned fully. It has absolutely no health benefits.

While we're at it, potato chips, candy bars, soft drinks and all other high calorie foods and drinks should be banned. Additionally, let's ban cuss words and offensive speech entirely, since it upsets people. You Nanny State fricks are turning this country into the plot of Demolition Man.

No, because too many state programs (State Police Retirement being one) are tied to cigarette taxes. The more you smoke, the money the state makes on taxes.

Most smokers are trashy and poor, so the money the state makes on cigarette taxes are pittances compared to what the state spends on healthcare for those people and/or subsidizing living expenses for someone who can't pay for their own groceries but somehow has an extra $150-200 a month to spend on cigarettes.

When done in moderation, the negative effects of these products can be offset by excercise. I know many fit people who partake in candy, hamburgers, etc and are in great health. You can't excercise away the negative effects of smoking.

Secondly, smoking not only affects the smoker, but also the people around them. I don't get a dose of calories in my salad from the guy at the next table eating a hamburger.

I would actually be in favor of lowering the drinking age like the rest of the civilized world.

There was a time when 18 year olds were mature enough to win two world wars.

If you treat 18 year olds like children dont be shocked when they act like children.
