Yea it's fine.
How do you know the last time they went somewhere they didn't have a coloring book?

Kids need stimulation, that's how they learn. They need a variety of it, and social interaction is a big part of it, particularly as it pertains to speech development.
My anecdotal evidence, I have a nephew who is now 5. He's been using an iPad/iPhone since he was at least a year and a half old. And there isn't anyone who's ever met him that would question his development. But the iPad was just a tool in that regard.
Eta: the iPad was introduced in 2010 so any study on its impact on childhood development would be fairly narrow in scope and would not be able to show any long term effects.

Bottom line, every criticism you have about things that parents do, you will either do or will strongly consider doing when you have your own kid(s).

Y'all need a new pediatrician.
Deleted the rest since this is a sensitive subject

We gave our daughter an old iPhone when she was about 12 months. She would play with it like most other toys, 5 minutes then move on to something else. She's 19 months now and has little interest in the phone, hers or ours. She has very little interest in TV. Her favorite things are playing outside or reading books. If she starts spending more time on the phone or tablet, I'm sure we'll moderate use. I have no issue with giving a 2-3 year old a tablet or phone while sitting at a table of adults. The kid's probably bored.

Your 19 month old has her own phone?? Why?

It's an extra phone lying around the house for the kid to use because you don't want a 19 month old playing on your brand new $700 Iphone.

My boys been knowing his way around an IPad since 2 yrs old. Not once has he gotten home and wanted to play with it. he takes his shoes off and heads strait out of the door! Thank goodness for that! I was iffy about it from th start but EVERYTHING is electronic now, even in schools so we may as well start early.

I am going to try to put off my daughter playing with tablets/phones as long as possible. I could really care less what other parents do with their kids though. Which is weird because most parents want to try to raise your kids. Parents suck arse for the most part.
When I start letting her play video games I want to try and see if I can do what this one parent did by only letting the kid learn in generational iterations. He wrote an article about it. The kid had to become proficient in old school arcades and work his way up to the most recent generation. The parent ended up creating a very well versed and highly skilled gamer.

My 20-month yo has never played on an iPad and can do all of those things. Instead of the iPad keeping his attention at home or in the car, we work with him ourselves. Not saying that's the way to do it, but your experience is hardly unique just because of the iPad.

You don't use books, flashcards, or anything like that?
I guess my point is, if used correctly, the end result is the same, there's no difference in the sense that it's just another learning tool like a flash card or whatever.

And that's my point. It's not specific to the iPad. We have books and puzzles mostly. And just regular communication. We say our ABCs every morning on the way to daycare and on the way home. And he can associate the symbols with a puzzle he takes apart and puts back together 1000 times a day.

My 3 year old son knows his way around his iPad. It's 2015 and I'll be damned if he won't know how to use the technology he's lucky enough to have around him.

My son plays for maybe 15 minutes a day. He has a cou0ke of letter and number games. He is 2.5,hes been playing it to this extent for a year. It's reserved as a special treat and can be taken away. It has really been good for his number and letter recognition. And yes he still colors, draws, plays with real puzzles, etc
