I see it every day in my assessments. The kids that are attached at the hip to the phones/tablets/video games are the ones that are being dealt a raw deal in life. The parents are just lazy and use those tools to shut them up. They are extremely useful and can be a great teaching tool. Limits must be set.
A colleague and I were discussing stuff like this over the weekend. We have a lot of things at our fingertips these days but it's actually harder to be a parent and to find the proper balance. When I was a kid cartoons came on one day a week for about 4-5 hours and that was it. We spent the rest of the time mostly away from the television. The concept of being able to take television with you to the bathroom, a restaurant, the car, etc, was Back to the Future type stuff.

I know times are different, but when I was a kid at that age my parents gave me coloring books and stuff like that to occupy me

And it can't be good for a kids eyes to be staring at a screen all day.

My point in saying same thing is that at 2 years old, it's probably a useful tool.

You weren't making points. You were just making statements. I can say "everyone should run 100 miles a day. It's the smart thing to do". That's not a point. I'm trying to get you to make a point and explain yourself. I don't necessarily disagree.

They should play and learn in different ways,there has to be structure.
I have twins,the last thing I'll let them do in the 3 or 4 hours they're home per day is spend 90% of it doing one thing, and not interacting with each other.

My daughter has had an iPad since she was about 6 months old. There are lots of educational apps for infants out there. She has been able to say her ABCs and count to 10 since she was able to talk. At 21 months now she is starting to read and spell certain words. For my wife and I it beats the hell out of being glued to shitty cartoons all the time. We do limit her time in it and she is fine when we take it, she just goes on to something else

Yeah, I'm no doctor or early childhood development specialist, but I am fairly confident that, at least based on anecdotal evidence, iPad use or lack there of has nothing to do with her speech. The reading to her, absolutely.

My 3 year old will play ABC mouse or watch train videos on YouTube. He watched a video of Lego trains the other day, and came home to start building his own track with his wooden set. I was impressed.
I fail to see how there is anything bad about that. If anything, it keeps his mind working.
