I'd like to turn back the clock to 2008 for a week or so. And a few nights would have to be spent at el cid.

This is not illegal. If someone is breaking into my home I have every right to shoot them through the door.

So it’s a legit question, something about this story is off…
In LA, you only have the right to use lethal force if you reasonably believe someone is in the process of committing a forcible felony and you are not otherwise involved in an unlawful act. Whether simply "hearing noises at the door" meets this definition is a legitimate question. Even if it does, cops are still probably going to arrest you, then let you make that argument in court. Especially when a host of other charges are involved.

I told my FIL while leaving the LSU baseball game that all those apartment spaces should be bought up and turned into bigger apartment buildings and then build a parking garage. Since it's close to campus the residents wouldn't need to have a campus parking pass if they're students.

His instincts as a man kicked in so he shot up a door and hit his girlfriend and dog. Amazing.

That appears to me be the case here. It was 1am.

Attempted 2nd degree murder is ridiculous based on the story I read.. but it’s probably not the full story.
The guy is a regular criminal so some important details are probably missing and this is unlikely just a case of him fearing for his life.

By shooting a firearm as a convicted felon, he was committing a separate unlawful act, which would arguably negate a self-defense argument.

Also, someone knocking--even banging--on your door at 1 am doesn't necessarily lead to a reasonable belief that a forcible felony is in progress.

Second degree murder in LA requires an intent to kill or inflict serious bodily harm (none of the other statutory definitions would apply here, so I assume this is the theory used). Shooting through a door when you know someone is on the other side probably meets this intent requirement. An incomplete crime is an attempt. Thus, attempted second degree murder.
