The commercials don't warn you about what may trigger Shingles.

For my husband, it was an especially vicious attack from his sharp tongued Mother who, among other things, wished him dead. And worse.

I had been in the oil industry and had friends come down with Shingles from specific job stresses. I saw the rash and knew some of his Mother's attack, and I got him to the hospital within two days of the appearance of the symptoms.

The medicine did work for him.

It also caused him to distance himself from that evil woman.

I had that. Looked like I had gotten the right side of my forehead burned. Went to the eye doctor as you need to especially watch out shingles around your eye.

Every once in a while I still have ghost sensations, not pain, where I had the shingles 8 years ago.

The medical director of my department(an infectious disease doctor) has an interesting theory. He says that maybe a reason why shingles cases now seem to be more frequent and worse than before the chickenpox vaccine is this... Because of the vaccine...people that had chickenpox before are not as exposed to people with chickenpox as they were before the vaccine. He wonders if being more frequently exposed to those with chickenpox maybe helps boost your own immunity against shingles? Remember...if you had chickenpox before...you can't get chickenpox again. You just have that virus lying dormant in your system.

Our pediatrician told us same thing that’s why he is pretty indifferent on the Chickenpox vaccine before age 7 or 8. He is concerned about contracting chicken pox after puberty bc the disease apparently is much worse as an adult. He has stated it could potentially be better in long run for entire family (Parents, Grands, etc) to be exposed again to chickenpox to potentially help not contract shingles.

He says there Has been a big increase in shingles since the inception of chickenpox vaccine.

As for the OP, I wouldn’t be too mad at your folks. My brother literally only got 1 chickenpox when he contracted the virus. He contracted it the same time as my brother and I so if not for the heightened awareness they might have missed it and confused it for just a random child sickness.

Valtrax and Lyrica is only thing that helps me. Most miserable pain I have ever had. The broken ribs statement is true. I usually don't sleep well for two weeks. The pain burns so much at times that I don't feel the cold from ice packs. Seems like the shingles gets pissed off at you and hurt even more.

I know what it feels like now and can head it off with medicine better now.

People that tell me they haven't had chicken pox (prior to vaccinations) are morons or braggards and sometimes both.

I never had chickenpox

Never realized it until I started working in healthcare at 27 and they did bloodwork and told me I had no resistance to chickenpox so I had to get the vaccine

Called my mom and sure enough I never had it

ETA: also has no resistance anymore to measles or mumps so I had to get the MMR too

I think a lot of adults are walking around with no resistance to measles and mumps and they assume they are covered from their vaccine as a kid

I had a mild case two years ago that resulted in a small rash (about the size of a half dollar) on my chest. It was stress induced and the nerve zone that it was in included my left arm. I still get ghost pains or minor flare ups in my nerves when I get stressed. This usually manifests itself as what could best be compared to tennis elbow pain. My physician advised me not to get the vaccine until I was 55.

I got the vaccine at the advice of my family doctor. It was not cheap. Insurance doesn't cover this vaccine but I know several people who got the shingles and thought the money was worth spending. To each his own.

Knew a woman who got shingles. Its very bad the first time. Recurrence, not so much. Stress is a huge factor in recurrence

I don’t know what was worse, the pain from the shingles or the judgment in the female pharmacist’s face when I picked up my valtrex.
