Well now the public has lost confidence in the official forecast, and the next time people might not react properly and there will be a big mess.
Agree with this, although it is probably more of a concern in places that don't get a certain type of severe weather often. Atlanta, for example, where 4-5 inches of snow became zero earlier this year. It's the second year in a row predictions of significant winter weather were totally off, and we're probably going to end up with another gridlock nightmare in the next few years because people aren't going to heed the warnings.
On the other hand, I expect it is more difficult for NWS to predict for places like Atlanta, where often the line between 6 inches and absolutely nothing is dependent on a swing of 3-4 degrees and precise timing.

Isn't it assumed that weather forecast isn't sketched in stone? Weather changes and the weather forecasters can only tell you what can possibly happen.
If they would have changed their forecast and something happened as a result of not shutting down businesses, etc then everyone would be bitching about how the weather forecasters should have just left the forecast as it was because by them changing it, it put people in harm's way.
It makes sense as to why they wouldn't want to change the forecast at the last minute. That would have likely created a frenzy and they would rather be safe than sorry. Bottom line.

Well weather services do get a hard on for severe weather, and I imagine it's because their viewership skyrockets. I love when a weak hurricane rolls through, and they send out a reporter to point at sticks in puddles.
National Weather Service doesn't have "viewership" it's a federal agency. The Weather Channel is not the National Weather Service.

It was well spelled out by the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE and most other actual METEOROLOGISTS that the gradient between getting a lot of snow and just rain was very tight. The difference between NYC/Philly/ETC getting 18 inches or freezing rain was less than 100 miles. The news outlets hyped it up, the news outlets created the panic, the new outlets didn't specify the uncertainty. Shep should look into his kind for the answers of incompetence.

I'm not sure you know what those words mean.

The thing is I watchedTWC the night before and they stated the models had changed and their on air expert lowered his snow totals and explained why but he also noted how tricky the forecast was and he was wondering what the official forecast would be from the Feds.
He did a great job explaining the dynamics and from what I learned this is quite common when predicting these events.
So why not tell the folks what is going on and let them weigh the consequences of their actions or inactions just as folks in La. do for hurricanes.

That "die if you don't evacuate " quote was probably based on Katrina. And th reasoning he used was that the NWS Was right that time but misled him this time? Might make me angry too.

For once S S is correct. The NWS has become just another wing of the democratic party. Another service to clean house.
