I used to always ask at least one off the wall question, typically early on in the interview/meeting. Helps two ways, let's the interviewer see how someone responds to something they absolutely didn't rehearse, and breaks the ice and typically relaxes them by making it seek less formal.

One of my favorites to ask was: If you had to get rid on one State in the US, which one would it be and why?

“ is your brother ????… ????”

Background info:
my older brother graduated from lsu as a PetE a few years in front of me and is working in Lafayette… I am graduating in PetE and interviewing chevron at CEBA…. Come in sit down shake hands. They guy interviewing me looks down ….is quiet ( he is only a few years out of college)… he looks up and ask me …. is your brother ????.??? ( not saying our names)…..I say yes he is… guy looks up and says… your brother slept with my fiancé…I know my brother and know that is very possible… so I just look at him in the eyes and say …”I guess this interview is over”… he gives me a look and no response…. I stare for a minute at him… get up and walk out… no words spoken..

I did not get the job:(

when was the last time you got mad at a job, why, and what did you do about it?

I ask about t heir training, and what was the most valuable lesson they learned from their training period.

When my former boss was interviewing me, his first two questions were, "Are you married, and do you have children?"

I thought that it was a little odd, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe he just wanted to keep things low-pressure and get to know me...Wish I would have known then that he was actually asking because he refuses to hire anybody in that position who is married and/or does have children. Because then that person won't be able to be available to him 24/7.

I would have hired you based on honestly. You can’t expect someone to work at a restaurant their whole life

It's a tough question because if you spin it as a positive then you appear disingenuous and if you're completely honest then you're literally telling them something bad about yourself.

As someone that used to interview a lot of candidates, they’re really not interested in your actual answer, but rather how you answer it. They now all the usual weaknesses people give. If you give one of those and it sounds rehearsed, you e failed. They’re looking for humility and genuineness. They know everyone has weaknesses and don’t really care what the actual weakness in, for most jobs at least.

Same here, I hire landscape workers. I always like to ask what is your favorite and least favorite plant and why. Half the people pause on “favorite” and I wonder if they really want to say weed.

We had interview teams - I always had to ask the weird questions - like are you afraid of the homeless, can you lift over 50 pounds, and what are your talents

Someone sang during in an interview once when asked her talents, which wasn’t terrible, but when she started to dance and wouldn’t stop - it got awkward
