Hi Artie.

Do you take anything to sleep now that you no longer drink?

Why not Restoril (temazepam) or Ambien to start?

Because these are not very good for first line agents, given their abuse potential and general danger, particularly as you age.

As far as the other "why nots?" You aren't getting the whole story, and it makes it look funny the way it's being told.

i just take benardryl
I took Benadryl for over 30 years for allergies and sleep - until I read a study that it can cause dementia - google it.

Have you seen the side effects of meds on commercials?

Everything causes something.

I heard about the dementia part as well. It is non addicting and works; we all get dementia so screw it.

And to the OP: try melatonin with benadryl unless you have other issues to take the said drug.

Anyone have any exp with this or testimonials? Really just wanting to know if it works and if it does , does it make you feel like shite waking up?

Not trying to be a dick but do you work out? I had a hardcore anxiety problem and could not sleep. I was on ambien and some other anti-depressants. I started working out a lot, eating right and weened myself off of the prescriptions. I feel great and sleep pretty damn good every night. Try a therapist too. It helps to talk through some of the stuff.

The day I quit drinking I started sleeping like a baby. When I was drinking I would fall asleep (pass out) at 10 or 11 then be wide awake from 2:00 am until 3:30 or 4.

You know what Seroquel is? Doxepin repackaged in smaller doses so the manufacturer can skirt generic drug laws and sell Seroquel as virtually a new drug--not subject to generic laws.

Can you say "Ca-ching"?

The 6-mg Seroquel did shite for me, so I now take 10mg Doxepin at night--sleep well AND save a ton of money.

If your doc won't go this route, I'd only take Seroquel if it proved EXTREMELY effective for your sleep. Or maybe get 10mg tabs of Doxepin and split 'em, taking 5mg per night.

Otherwise, look for something else that's less $$ than "Seroquel."

Dude, you are wrong about this. The drug you refer to is SILENOR not Seroquel. Silenor is the repackaged doxepin; Seroquel is something entirely different.

I'm a big fan of your posts and I'm sure this is the first time you've ever been in error about anything. Normally, your posts are full of insight, wisdom and erudition--well, even the best of us are wrong every once in a Hailey's Comet-Blue Moon sort of way. You're still my favorite poster far and away and I'll continue to look for you in guidance in all areas of life.

Well thank you. It isn't for everyone, but it's for me. My wife laughs that I fall asleep in 2 minutes. It's because I'm not carrying around any extra baggage.

Sorry about the error--you're right, it is a "first" for me. And thank you for your vote of confidence, I'll continue to provide you and others with the same high quality, informed advice, opinions and analysis for which I am well known.

Consider something like Trazadone. It is a lot safer. Get with your doc on whether or not this would be a better alternative as well as to actual dosage.

I would consider getting to the root of your sleep problem.

I wasn't a fan of it but it depends on the individual.

I agree with this. I'd see a therapist instead of getting prescriptions from your doctor.

Understand where you are coming from. Actually, he needs to do both. Get meds to get a handle on things while he gets with a decent therapist and gets through enough sessions to get to the root of whatever it is.
