Serious responses please - What to do about neighbor's pitbulls?

There's a young couple (30-40ish) three houses down the road from me. They have a kid and two pitbulls. The dogs are always out on their front porch not tied up and are allowed to roam around if they choose. I used to run up and down the road (it's a small residential road) but quit last summer when I noticed the dogs. They will come out to the road and follow anyone walking or running on the roadway. They've never attacked anyone that I know of but I quit going that way out of an abundance of caution.
I can get over not going that way. But my problem is that I have a three year old son and although my back yard is fenced in, the fence along the road is quite low (only about 3 feet high). I'm afraid one of these days one of those dogs will decide to attack and I don't want my kid to be the victim here.
Should I call animal control and report my concern, go directly to the neighbors in question and tell them of my concern but risk sounding like a bitch, or do I take my chances and not say anything? If I ever see them in my yard, I'm going to shoot them.
My yard, my family's safety, my rules.

Rat poison in a treat over the fence.

If you talk to them directly you know how that conversation is going to go.

I can't do that. My conscience won't let me. I can't just kill them if they're not on my property or not threatening me or someone else.

Exactly. That's why I really don't want to do that. Is there a way to remain anonymous if I contact animal control?

Leave an anonymous note in their mailbox asking them to stop letting the dogs roam free without leashes. See how they respond. If they don't change, you are fully within your rights to do what you have to do if the dogs threaten you or your family.

I’m sure they will ask your info but you don’t have to provide it. Just tell them a concerned neighbor.

Build the fence higher! Make your neighbors pay for it.

Stop being a pussy. I swear I wonder how some of you people get through life. You do know a lab could kill a child also right? It's all about how a dog is raised

The first time animal control rolls up and the dogs are loose, the problem will likely be solved by the owners building a fence quickly. If not, the second time animal control shows up and they are loose, problem solved permanently.

Yea, we all know how that conversation would go as well.

Go down there with some freshly baked pastries or some delightful confectioneries and politely introduce yourself to the dog’s owners. Talk to them about the social contract. Invoke the Bible, Aristotle and John Locke. I am sure they will agree with you . Pit bull owners are usually very amenable to logical appeals to their better selves.

People with pit bulls can't afford my neighborhood
Maybe move into a better one
