never had senior skip day here

If anything happens to one of those kids on senior skip day, trust me, some parent is going to sue the school saying the school knew about it and didn't stop it.

Knowing the parents of some of my students, I'm sure they will be hosting the skip day party.

I say go for it.

It's extra credit, had they taken care of their responsibilities the first time it wouldn't be an issue.

Hell yeah it's a real thing. At least at my school. We spleen to the beach and had a huge beach party where everyone got drunk. The thing is we were only 100 yards from the head mistresses' house.

Also, I forget if my sister's school had a senior skip day but there was a week before graduation where everyone would go rent beach houses together. Unfortunately, it's gotten kinda grim because almost every year now, some poor sap gets killed because of alcohol. One year, the girl survived, but she drank anti-freeze that someone put into a vodka bottle and her organs started melting.

We did it in 2011. But times are changing, everyone is more PC now.

When I was in HS, the administration just took Class of the Year points for things like can food drive, pop tabs, donations, etc. The class that won a day off late in the Spring semester. Without fail, every year another class would be winning and then all of the sudden the seniors closed the gap and pulled it out.

Just showing your power. If you really cared about the students, why would you require it be tomorrow?

You just want to show them how much power you have.

Why can't they sacrifice senior skip day to do the test corrections that could pull their grade up 1 or 2 letter grades?!?!

Why cant you let them do it the next day, or last friday?

Exactly. If OP had started a thread asking if he should give extra credit, these same asking him here would be crying about kids having it easy and how they should have taken care of business.

He's not giving a pop quiz or test, he's doing something he has no obligation to do in the first place. It's a good lesson in responsibility, choices and consequences.

I applaud your effort. The kids want to skip school let him skip school but then they have to deal with the consequences of that.

If not, then explain why it has to be tomorrow. I bet if they moved skip day, you would find another reason to try and force them to come to your class.

A kid makes a 70 on test 1 and does test corrections to earn half the points back. That's a 85 now.

So the final test grade is not a true representation of how much information they retained?

Yes it is. It's saying that you don't really have to prepare during the year because you will get a chance to correct your tests at the end of the year.

Leaving this here

Well the goal of education is teaching a kid to master a task, not cram and retain information for a short period of time. If you have a certain slate of tasks that a kid should master in a school year and they master those tasks, who really gives a frick about the grades?

That's a different discussion, but I agree. Of course it may not have been something they knew in advance.

Either way, your argument is with extra credit in general.

I teach seniors as well. It's a helluva time to get them to do anything. I wouldn't have a problem with the senior skip day. If it really is a tradition at the school then let them make up their work on Tuesday. I wouldn't give them a free pass but I'm not trying to bust anyone's balls too hard at this point either. I also treat the classroom as a meritocracy and most of the kids do a good job. If they want to skip a day no harm no foul.
