If you're looking for a non-racing road bike, check the Surly ' Long Haul Trucker'.

Durability? Here's an LSU baw that rode his from the French Atlantic coast to the Black Sea. 71 days.

I still don't understand how the guy that maybe makes $15 an hour doing tuneups can afford a $6k carbon fiber bike. I'm guessing they finance them.

The baw probably smokes trees and slams OT 4s on the daily. Im not made at him for living his American dream .

BTW, Dicks Sporting Goods does assemblies and repairs. I bought my last bike at Sun & Ski in Houston. Raleigh brand and its been solid. Raleigh, Diamond, Schwinn etc are decent $400-$1000 options for MTB and Hybrid/Road. Raleigh is higher end of the 3 I listed in my opinion.

I got a Giant Roam 3 a few weeks ago and I love it. It is for exactly what you are describing. $490 at local bike shop.

I researched bikes for about a month before getting this one. I looked really hard at bikesdirect.com but ultimately decided the savings were not worth it. Bike shop assembles it and I get 2 years of tune ups included. Plus, I wanted to be fitted and make sure I got the right size.

I was between this and the Specialized Dual Sport. I went with the Giant because it was about $150 cheaper and reviews said they were very comparable.

Yep, I ride a Diamondback Sync'r with a nice DT Swiss wheelset on it, about $1400 for the bike and another $500 for the wheels, and I still hate taking it to shops because of the Dicks/Academy stigma.

don't sweat it. a super-talented and accomplished pro continental team (rally) rides diamondback bikes. if it's good enough for pros...

Never really tested any Trek road bikes. Rode Specialized, Cannondale and Giant. All were pretty equal but I liked feel and price of Giant the best.

I've only had it about 3 weeks but it has been a great purchase so far. I got a small rack for the back for trips to beer store, but other than that it is ready to go and ride straight from the store.

Not sure of difference between 2 and 3 so I can't speak on that but I imagine they are pretty similar.

The Vilano FORZA 4.0 is lowest priced road bike on the market with Shimano STI integrated brake lever shifters. This is an excellent choice for those getting into road cycling and perfect for folks who are adding miles every week through group rides, fitness cycling, or even sprint triathlon races.

Vilano Forza

As far as assembly, took me about 15 min to get it assembled and adjusted to my preferences. No “special” tools unless you don’t have a set of Allen wrenches and a crescent wrench, in which case I’d question your ability to ride a bike, much less put it together.
