I can't think of any racial slurs that are treated the way the n word is. My company it's an automatic firing using the n word unless you're black. When HR covered this they actually used wetback, jap, wop, etc when making examples but wouldn't say the n word.
So would it be safe to say that we have a double standard when it comes to using certain slurs as LNCHBOX has stated?

Pointing out that non-whites in positions of power get away with much worse on a daily basis isn't defending racism, it is decrying racism.
Not necessarily, and it's a non sequitur regardless.
The whole reason you get a "not necessarily" is because there isn't a blatant, reported incident to even compare this to.

especially here in the south, is that white people don't want to think of themselves or their ancestors as "bad" people for saying a word that their parents used, their grandparents used, and in some cases they continue to use.
My friend, Yankees are some of the most openly racist people you will ever meet.

Sure. The only non-hypocrites are dead people.
The problem is that what does this "argument" achieve? Do you have a desire to drop N-bombs like the lady in OP? If not, why do you care so much about a double-standard with this word in particular?

I can confirm this from my experiences spent in the North East. It is pretty damn bad.

There are probably multiple reasons behind it, but I suspect a primary one, especially here in the south, is that white people don't want to think of themselves or their ancestors as "bad" people for saying a word that their parents used, their grandparents used, and in some cases they continue to use. It's easy for people identify with the secretary, and admitting it might get them labeled racist. (Not judging here - just stating an observation).
What the frick is this bullshite? You think hard R's are only dropped in the south?

Show me the blatant racist incident reported that was linked in this thread.

Because it's part of a larger, more nefarious mindset and movement.
You can't be this dense.
Do I need to post the "it's not about the nail" video for you?

I Would like equal treatment. Everyone should be playing by the same rules when the consequences involve having your life ruined.

She used it with the R at the end too
Im not reading all of this but im sure the TD N-word whataboutism is strong as usual

of course there is a double standard. I think it is stupid to say but i am not sure people should lose their life/job over a word. She is obviously an idiot but I also think the coach could have tried to handle it without costing someone their job. I am not offendable though and believe people should just treat it as the person who said it is ignorant. Saying a word doesn't make them a racist...hating a group of people for their skin color does.

Growing up, a good friend of mine’s parents were from Boston. They were racist as hell.

I'm not. I'm just not a person who constructs bad arguments and strategies.
You gain nothing in addressing the larger issue by building a hill to die on regarding the N-word.
You risk implicitly defending actual racism (like many in this thread).
Tell me how that strategy is logical, rational, and +EV?

There’s overt and covert racism. They all are equally bad.

Truth. In the south, you will live around, work with, socialize with people of all colors and hues.
In the south, the racism is more casual and worn on the sleeve.
As a poster here once said
"He's not as racist as you think he is, and he's not as racist as he thinks he is."
Because when the chips are down and people need help, like after a storm, nobody Cares what color you are. People are just helping.
You might not like certain segments of people, but it's almost never completely based on race and you'll have people of different races than you that you are close friends with and generally like.
Because it's about character and how people treat you. And even the ones you don't like you'll generally tolerate.
Up north, there's way less social mixing and WAY more harsh and open racism behind closed doors.
You want to see real racism? Get some liberal Yankees in private where they think you share their secret views and have your mind blown. They make the most dyed in the wool southern racist look reasonable

I miss getting called Honkey. I just took it as slang for white dude, which I was.
In HS, there used to be joke sessions with black dudes where we would trade lines. Many were the same joke, just the races changed. Even comedians were very anti PC. People laughed at themselves.
Don Rickles would be considered Hitler if his act were going today.
