If she had said black, no one would bat an eye.

It wasn't hateful, it was stupid.

Damn near everyone has said there should be consequences for her use of that word. I'll need you to link me to those saying otherwise.

The overarching issue is that this is only newsworthy when the colors are in the correct order. Much like "mass" shootings and police brutality.

You just proved my point. My comment was out of line and hyperbolic. It has real-world ramifications outside of the person I spoke (or typed) the words to.

You made a judgment on who I am based upon the language I used. It speaks to who you think I am as a person (you say I lack emotional intelligence). Why? These are just dots on a screen, right?

I didnt prove your point. I didnt make judgement of who you are based on the language you used. I didnt speak to who you are as a person. If anything I gave you a compliment for having a well thought out response and asked a serious of additional questions for you to expound upon and you took it as a slight.

Well that "argument" doesn't even work because her intent was to be clearly derogatory and racist with her use of it.

This example is not where you create that hill to die on.

Reserve that for examples that have some flexibility. This scenario has no flexibility in interpretation. She was racist as shite.

The better example is the LSU tennis girl who used the word in a non hateful way but was kicked off team

A black LSU football player used the word in a hateful way on national TV and no discipline whatsoever.

Sure it is. This lady is most likely a pos. Why is this news though?

We all have the capacity to be offended by certain words used in certain contexts.

Well certainly. But ultimately how we react is up to us. The word itself cannot force us to do anything. That's the point. We give it power.

Think about this. You take a dog. You yell at it in a harsh tone.

"YOU ARE GOOD BOY! YOU ARE THE BEST BOY IN THE WORLD AND I LOVE YOU MORE THAN ALL THE OTHER DOGS! "

It will tuck its tail and whimper and recoil like it's been hit.

But you can tell it in a sweet voice "You ARE just a stupid dog aren't you? You stupid shite eating turd muncher. Who's a worthless piece of shite!? YOU ARE! Yes you are a furry piece of garbage."

And it will lick on you and love you and be oh so happy.

Context and intent, I'd argue, are more important than the words themselves.

quote:

We’ve seem to have lost the ability to have empathy for those that are offended.

And the townspeople stopped caring after the boy cried wolf too many times. Let's not act like there aren't ENDLESS false accusations of violence and bad actions being justified because someone SAID that someone else said the dreaded word (that somehow is also used all the time and no one cares.)

Remember BYU recently? Clarke Perkins? Lebron?

And no, I don't think if someone says they heard someone else say a word that justifies violence.

If two white people say the N word with no minority in sight, is it an issue? .

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by issue, but regardless, context would matter. Are they singing along to a rap song with the word in the lyrics?
Probably not much of a problem here

Or are they opining about their hatred of black people? They may not face consequences, or offend anyone. The language used could serve to enforce a bond between them over common ideas, and also indicate certain beliefs and their perception of black people. It could also just be habit and ignorance, depending on the circumstances.

Exactly.

The "white people can't be caught rapping to the lyrics of a song" standard is absurd.

Ran across this earlier on another site I sometimes look at. The commenters were saying they should find who the text was really meant for and fire them too.

Is that how far we’ve come? That simply receiving a text like that is grounds for firing? What in the frick?

A government official dropping clearly racist N-bombs to black employees is going to make local news.

This isn't on CNN or anything

*ETA: I just re-read OP and it wasn't even on the news when posted. It just made local news 30-40 min ago, likely sourcing from this thread.

I'm most definitely not. The context is clear on that one. A dumb text sent to the wrong person. Not newsworthy. Fire her and send her on her way but leave her earned retirement alone.

I'm talking about words and language in a larger context

Pretty loose use of "government official" IMO. It is bizarre to me that you will admit the double standard exists but are arguing with me about it here
