sinlge dude, sounds like an eccentric, maybe very frugal, saved his pennies, largely during times when your money would double every seven years, could have bought a couple of shares in a few companies at the right time and held on to them, inheritance, many possibilities, doesn't seem far fetched to me

Ya they are assuming this guy has kids/family and spent a bunch.

If he didn't and just hung around his town, you end up with quite a bit of dough.

I know I could cut a lot from my budget, I just don't want to.

Any large expense that occurs in life just crushes your savings downstream and timing is every thing. A kid at 22 kills way more future money than a kid at 35, or no kids at all.

Right. Got to enjoy a little bit of it. When you're dead, you're dead, who cares what chaos is unleashed when that happens

"He would have some Fritos and a Coke for breakfast, a quick cheese sandwich at the library, and at home would have a frozen dinner because the only thing he had to work with was a microwave," his financial adviser, Edward Mullen, told the Globe. "He was a very unusual gentleman."

Interesting article. ""He never went out," Mullen, the financial adviser who helped Morin build his wealth, told the New Hampshire Union Leader." LINK
