School buses picking kids up at 830?

On way to work 830-840ish school bus was picking kids up.
Looked like normal kids, this wasnt a short bus.
Are there schools that start at 9 AM now?
No school til 9 AM and teachers banging students left and right, where was this stuff back in my day?

normal in all the areas I have lived. When they need to rotate buses between grade, middle and High school

I've wondered about this too. I see buses in our area from 6:00am to 6:pm. Seems like they run all day.

I'm just surprised they have school busses... You don't see them anymore as much like when I was a kid...

Could be a late bus.
School districts all over the country have a shortage of bus drivers. Down in da parish, that pretty much have exactly the same number of drivers as busses, so if a couple of drivers call in sick, there are not enough drivers to go around.
The drivers then have to extend their route, pick up additional kids, run part of a second route after their first route, etc. They call this a "split bus".
I would say we have a split bus picking up the kids at least 2-3 times a month. When this happens, the bus is usually at least 20-30 minutes late, and often comes from a different direction. The bus ride home, I would say there is a split bus at least once a week. I guess they have more problems with after-school bus drivers than before.

Dude I was about to say there are times when I leave a little later than normal and they will be out at like 9:30.

Not uncommon in Texas, because the same buses run for elementary, middle, and high school. Usually, elementary start earliest, then high school starts latest. Rinse and repeat for getting out of school.
same here in TN. high school bus 645am, middle school 745, elementary 830

This is one way where TX schools can get the cost down.
EBR parish spends $13,300 per student for education
Cy-Fair ISD in Houston spends around $7,900 per student. Katy ISD is a little over $8K per student
You have higher density populations thus less busses needed but also space out timing of elementery, middle, and highschool is a money savings as well.

Seems like a good place to vent about this... Not sure if it's like this everywhere now, but I often drive thru a certain neighborhood as a shortcut to the interstate and I get stuck behind the bus sometimes. Not a big deal, but this route stops at every other corner it seems like. And a lot of the time it's just 1 or 2 kids at each one. Can't these kids consolidate at one damn corner? It's in a nice neighborhood, so it's not like it's dangerous or they need to cross busy streets or anything.
Back in my day I walked almost a mile to my bus stop at the entrance to the neighborhood. (I know I know, I used to walk 4 miles in the snow, get off my lawn etc etc.) But seriously, I don't get why these kids can't walk 1 or 2 more blocks each and turn 5 bus stops into 1

quote:Kingwood High school just re-opened March 19th from Hurricane Harvey. They were only going to school for 4.5 hours a day at Summer Creek. The kept the same 4.5 schedule for the rest of the year so school doesn't start till 9:30

We don't run busses in my suburb. I wish they did because the afternoon carpool is a total cluster. Lazy parents say that their kids are walkers so they get out 10 minutes earlier. All they do is walk to the nearest intersection back in the neighborhood where their moms are lined up along the curb waiting to pick them up. All so mommy doesn't have to go through the dreaded carpool line. And there are literally 25-30 cars all parked in a row and the neighborhood road is down to one lane when all of the rest of the parents are trying to dodge them to get through to the school.

Piggy backing in this thread:
Does anyone else notice that the worst offenders from giving no fricks are school bus drivers?
I mean, they have a shitty job with those monsters I understand, but stop signs still exist. They stop at every damn abandoned RR crossing but fly through rvery stop sign. And you best not be near the school parking lot after those kids get dropped off. They fly out of there at 40 mph and give no shits.
