Scammers should be shot

Never think it’ll happen to your family, but a scammer called my grandma this morning saying I had that I caused a wreck that seriously hurt a pregnant lady. And that I was being held in jail and needed $8900 to bail out, but didn’t want my parents to know until I could talk to them in person.
Both of my grandparents talked to “me” and my public defender several times this morning. They agreed that something felt off, but they were 100% convinced they were talking to me.
Unfortunately, they went to town, took out the money, and sent it over to some account provided by the scammers. After getting the first payment, they call my grandparents back to tell them that the woman lost the baby and would settle with me for an additional $15,000.
Fortunately they refused to send over any more money and called my parents. They were bound and determined it was me who they were talking to. I had a couple meetings and didn’t have my phone with me. So now I have my entire family blowing up my phone thinking I’m about to do prison time.
shite sucks. Spent all afternoon trying to convince my grandparents that who they were talking to was not me. Scary part is they are some of the relatives I would think would not fall for something like that. Those scammers know how to play your emotions

I've done fraud investigations for a large payment processor before. I saw scams all of the time and those people are fricking pond scum.

If you want some satisfaction in life look up Kitboga on YouTube.A tech guy that fricks with scammers for hours when they call him.

Wow that’s about as intricate of a scam I’ve seen.

Why didn’t they call your parents immediately?

That sucks - I’m sorry
I had a friend that happened to also

I am sorry for your grands. In addition to the emotional turmoil to which they were subjected, their money is probably in some off-shore account right now and gone forever.
People should be able to track these scammers down and should be permitted to summarily execute them.
The same for computer hackers.

And created this thread as part of the cover up.

Old people are the most gullible people on earth. They will believe anything they're told.

Yeah, they're not getting any of that back.

They said I was on the phone pleading with them to not call my parents so I could bond out and tell them in person that I hit a pregnant lady. They were terrified and obviously acting on emotion but they were completely convinced it was me they were talking to

That is insane. They are taking advantage of people's vulnerabilities. Does anyone know what the punishment is for people who are caught scamming?
I would be making a baseless comment by saying "they need to give out tougher sentences for people caught scamming so that it wouldn't be worth getting caught", but I am sure its more complex than that.
My mom is 74. She almost got scammed one day, but at the last second she had second thoughts.. I always tell her to never answer if she doesn't know the number, if she does and you don't know who they are then hang up. If they tell you some bullshite, go verify their claims before you do anything..
I have to tell her that more times than I should, but scammers are some dirty fricks. Sorry your grandparents got scammed.

My favorite Kitboga
I’ve got my mom listening to this guy. She learned a lot about how these scams go down. However her new favorite hobby is seeing how long she can keep them on the phone.

A lot of this money ends up in Nigerian banks, and those banks look the other way when their account holders suddenly receive several thousand dollars.

That happened to me once when I was visiting my grandmother. Inda assholes pretending to be customer service for the satellite company.
I got on and quoted Mola Ram's heart pull speech with the same gusto

Grandparents maybe should stop answering the phone. My dad (70s) gets these scam calls all the time and laughs in their face.

This guy must be a grandson of J. Paul Getty.

I guess your grandparents did not have enough presence of mind to ask the caller a question that only you and the grandparents would know.
