I believe it does. The "R" word carries a very strong connotation and is wielded as a sword in social discourse.

Meh. I wouldn't go around saying it in mixed company personally, but I wouldn't go around saying "poopy head" in mixed company either. I consider them to be substantially similar in their level of offensiveness.
