Anybody on here have a salt water fish tank?

I have a 29 gallon breeder tank that I have used as a freshwater tank off and on throughout my life and I was thinking of using it for a saltwater tank.

I really have 2 main questions:

1) what local fish store (New Orleans area) would be best for me to use? Being that I am a beginner at this, I need one that will kind of coach me through it. I want a fish store that cares about the hobby and isn’t just trying to sell me shite.

2) what are some articles or books that I can read (or vids to watch) that will help educate me on what I need to do to get started?

Your local fish store only wants to sell you a bunch of shite you don't need. Your best resource would be salt water forums and reading a bunch. What are you planning on doing? Reef tank with corals and fish or fish only? If reef tank, what kind of corals do you want to have? What kind of fish? I'll be glad to help out with advice. Feel free to pm or we can keep the conversation here and have others chime in.

My end goal would be to have a reef tank with some anemones for clownfish to live in but I know reef tanks are hard to beginners so I might start with a FIsh only with live rock tank first.

Idk exactly what fish I want other than the clown fish. I’m hoping to stay with cheaper fish in the beginning so I don’t accidentally kill a $100 fish.

What would your suggestion be for a beginner to start with?

Reefs aren't that difficult. Just need a routine and stick to it.

I say do a lot of reading and go ahead and set up for corals. You have the tank, but you'll need lighting (led or led-t5 hybrid) filtration (mechanical and chemical - I'd budget in a skimmer if you won't have a sump) and flow (poweheads). You will either need to buy salt mix and RO/DI filter or buy premixed saltwater from the local fish store. What kind of budget are you working with?

Lighting and filtration will be your most important considerations. I'm assuming if it was running fresh, it'll probably be enough to get you by as a fish only with live rock (FOWLR) to get started.

As soon as you decide to make the jump with an anemone or corals your lighting will need to be capable and well as your filtration and even water source (RODI).

On Reef Central there's a newbie board full of these types of discussions, so you can usually answer most of your questions just by browsing over there. But I don't mind chiming in here answering questions too.

They're a lot of work to maintain properly. A 29 gallon is on the small side to maintain a constant salinity level of water. The fish are expensive and you don't want any to die b/c of water quality. If you go with a 29, I would recommend you purchase damsels. They're hearty, relatively inexpensive but colorful. However, they're aggressive so you can't mix with other types of fish.

forget clown fish, go out in the gulf and catch a few small lionfish, drop 'em in the tank, no loss if they die, head back out catch a few more, rinse and repeat, win-win for everyone...

I have a 180 gallon that has been running for about 10 years and recently replaced my lights with a couple of these

They are much better than I expected for the price, and I am growing some corals.
