Get a Lexus RX 350 - as new as your budget allows. Shoot for a '08 or '09. Look for an AWD model if possible.

It's got an airbag for the driver's knees!

Avoid that Lincoln. It has a "poor" rating from IIHS for the front-overlap test:

Compare to a 2004(!) Lexus RX:

Do some homework on IIHS's website: LINK
The Accord is good: LINK

If safety is the primary concern, a large SUV with body on frame is the correct answer.

This is wrong-headed. A Tahoe has nowhere near the crash-avoidance agility of a smaller car. If you're just looking to win some "Newton's Law battle" with every other vehicle on the road, then sure. Most crashes aren't so simple.

Tell that to my wife. She prefers a manual. She also has a lead foot from hell and our insurance is always astronomical because of it.

I'm well aware, but many MVCs cannot be completely avoided despite technology. I see firsthand results daily and the smaller vehicle is almost always on the losing end.

I'm digging the used military truck. Didn't realize you could get one so cheap.

I almost bought one of those until a friend who worked on them in the military talked me out of it. Apparently they need hubs (the part that attaches the tire to the axle) all the time and the hubs are astronomically expensive. It didn't look like such a deal after that. Guy trying to sell me one had three and was trying to sell two of them to get cash to get the first one running. That should have told me all I needed to know.
