Yep, can't show weakness.
I'm glad I accepted my mediocrity long ago..

Im having a hard time typing this and a hard time answering any questions that are being asked in this thread. I lost my best friend due to suicide. I call him a kid because it was 15 years ago but he got in trouble with the law and and felt he let his family down due to this mistake. I talked to him that day and he seemed fine and it stills haunts me that I could have said or done something to prevent what my friend did. I will always hold a guilt that I could have helped, but deep down in side I know his mind was always determined, just wish his heart was too.

I will say this if any of you ever need someone to talk to, just to vent . Don't hesitate to reach out.
This is exactly why I've never & will never type KYS in any context to someone on the Internet.
We all live in troubled times now, & even amongst our own countrymen, there's a punitive nature emanating from us as a people in so many aspects of life: Draconian laws, job insecurity, nasty trolls in every webpage.
I can see how some people get to a place where they think they have to be perfect, & one mistake could push them into a mindstate that there's no way to fix it. And if they thought of talking about it, I'm sure "Darwin award" would be the expected response & figure why bother?
Family is such a sacred bond, that people in a dark place may not want to bring them there by talking about it. That being said, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family & friends. I truly hope you find comfort in time.

Took a high profile gig last year, I never stopped working. 7 days/week. After 9 months had to go to the ER and while I'm getting fluid and meds, I'm seeing if they have wifi.
Decided to go back to my old cushy job. It was an eye opening experience and I'm glad I could do it and survive.
It's just not worth it. No amount of money is worth your health. Just to be able to enjoy a beautiful fall morning and watch football all day without having to do reports and get ready for meetings the next week is something I'm cherishing today.
Eat good food, drink good beer, enjoy nature and all the marvels the world has to offer, enjoy the company and relationships of good people, listen to awesome music, and just live. Life's too short

Honestly, all that says to me is we need to have a far more open conversation about mental health and substance abuse in this country. We tend to associate those problems with people who are outliers in society. You can be wildly successful, incredibly likeable, and a functional human being and have those issues. But people want to turn a blind eye or think it can't happen to them or to loved ones that are otherwise pretty normal folks.

Well said. Best said.
So many aren't self aware enough to know when to reach out for help. And so many more don't know how to read the signs in the behavior of their loved ones until it's too late.
You combine those two things and it equals a lot of very uneccessary hurt, suffering, pain and death.

I respectfully disagree. I doubt it's any more than the gen pop.
when I go to CLEs and they have an hour on mental health, they always have data that show lawyers are totally screwed up compared to the general population. more substance abuse, physical issues, etc

The poster from the poliboard ( I feel terrible for forgetting his name) was one of the most thoughtful strangers I've ran across here.

Just live. Life's too short.
Just live. Life's too short.
We waste so much of our life
behind a desk and the part is waisted trying to pick out every single flaw in that person you just met.
Enjoy the company you're wiyh. Appreciate the fact they want to spend time with you. Treat people either and hopefully they will so the same.

I've lost sight of the beauty of life a couple of times and made mistakes. A couple of years ago I accepted a job with responsibility and high pay, but ended up working 80-90 hours a week last summer. I took another job after last summer was over that has less responsibility, more free time and less money and am 100% more satisfied.
I'm who I am and can't get away with pretending to be what I am not. I enjoy simplicity and beauty, and am thankful I can change paths if I want. Got a diagnosis a few months ago that was a bit scary, and I've spent a lot more time reaching out to relatives and old friends. I think a lot of us struggle with how we define success at times and look to external factors to make our evaluations, which isn't fair to ourselves. To me, peace and contentment is far more important than feeling like I'm doing what I am supposed to be doing for the good of society, or for appearance.

This thread makes me sad, but also reminds me how blessed I am to still be here. I suffer from depression and have gone through some dark times. I've gotten really good at hiding it and no one really knows what's going on inside. It's gotten better over the years but it always finds a way to come back. I've felt it over the last couple of weeks or so and this thread woke me up a little.
RIP THF

We evaluate our success and happiness on what we precieve others think, which may not be fair, but it's what we do.
It's really hard to get past constantly worrying what others think of you. I deal with it every day.

Do the best you can and let others think what they wish to think. Don't concede your joy, peace, happiness to others...is not worth it, been there

Someone posted stats earlier, but I think those are probably dated. It might be sample bias but the amount of suicides I've heard about for medical students and residents the past few years is sobering. I've been doing 80+ hours weeks of high stress the last few months and it's really affected me (despite being someone with a great support system).
Lots of good thoughts in this thread.

Standing in a bar restroom last night, some guy says "dicks out for harambe." I started laughing like hell. I go back in the bar and three other guys were saying it.
Here's to you, THF. I was in a low spot this time last week. No one knows what another is going through. I hope you're in a place of peace now and you have eternal happiness.
