It is pretty spiteful. It's a window into the type of ethics existent in Russian leadership from the Soviet era until the present.

I must also admit- It's a helluva deterrent.

That's the problem. What happens if this thing crashes. Maybe nothing, maybe the launch of all their nukes. There's no way to know. It's an automatic system with human input needed. Even having this this is insane.
well, shouldn't it went kapow dec 31 1999?

True. It ensures that no matter what, they'll be able to lash out in the case of a nuke attack. The problem is that in order to do this, they've taken their whole nuclear arsenal and put itchy the disposal of a machine. There is no human "fail-safe".

Probably this:

By most accounts, it is normally switched off and is supposed to be activated during dangerous crises only; however, it is said to remain fully functional and able to serve its purpose whenever needed.

No, there is no "we will have to see". We have our main command and control deep inside a mountain of solid granit as well for the same reason, so it can survive any nuclear attack. There is no bunker buster or nuke that can reach that deep. About the only thing that could take it out would be a planet killer sized asteroid.

Oh I don't know, maybe the part where it says the system is normally turned OFF?

You'd think with all the nuclear reduction talks over the years our leaders would at least put decommissioning this thing on the table as an issue.

Obama? The riskiest aren't even following through on what they agreed to as it is.

Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you *keep* it a *secret*! Why didn't you tell the world, EH?

I bet we have the same thing.

MAD. I doubt we walked away from it. That said, I trust US vacuum tube and transistor technology more than I trust it coming from Moscow.

I doubt we do. I know we could make such a system, one far better than the ones the Russians have. Rather I think why we don't have one is we've got better sense than to build such an insane monstrosity. The last thing you want is your entire nuclear arsenal being able to be launched by a computer without any human fail-safe to stop it in case something goes wrong with the system.

That video is beyond a stretch. But don't be fooled into thinking Russia is any more our friend now than they were at the height of the Cold War.
