How the hell do you all of a sudden become trapped and surrounded by enemy combatants like that? And by yourself on top of all that

This guy was a JTAC and extremely isolated. Very easy to become surrounded and overwhelmed. I've supported entire ODA teams/other SOF cut off and surrounded within hand grenade range of the enemy. If it weren't for my hellfire missiles they would have been decimated.

I see, didn't realize they were isolated like that, I just assumed he was a regular infantry guy. I see what you are saying. I asked b/c that city isn't very big and in pictures looks like flat desert, just seemed you could scan the desert and get away before enemy gets to you. I assumed he would never be far from the main army also. Obviously his job to direct air strikes means he has to move away from everyone else. Thanks for the reply.

If he was the commanding officer doesn't matter how many people were with him. Even in the US Military the Code of the United States Fighting Force states...

quote:

I. I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.
II. I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist.

So technically he did the right thing even in the eyes of the US government. To answer your question yes he was the last man standing and isolated.

Gotta admire what he did. Hope I'd do the same knowing a bunch of hajis are gonna capture me, parade me around, than torture me to death. Think I'd rather have my own ordinance rain down on me and get it over quickly.

Sounds like a movie script, I have an eyebrow raised at this one.

Brings to mind the actions of Capt. Bill Carpenter (the "lonesome end" on West Point's 58 team) calling in an airstrike on his group's position.

Military Times

quote:

After Captain Carpenter organized a hasty defense, it became apparent that the insurgent force was at least of battalion size. The insurgents launched a determined frontal attack and were successful in overrunning one platoon. Realizing the severe consequences if the enemy forces were able to penetrate the entire company area, Captain Carpenter ordered supporting jet aircraft to drop napalm directly on the company's position. The napalm bombs hit the top of the trees in the center of the company position and detonated 25 feet above ground. As a result, the fiery napalm carried directly into the charging insurgents and passed over most of the friendly troops. The skillfully directed air strike completely subdued the Viet Cong attempt to overrun the company.
