I’m not saying it’s happening. In fact, I have serious doubts. But if it is going to happen, he won’t wait much longer. Right now the ground is frozen, thus making movement of ground forces easy. But in a few weeks the spring thaw will come, making huge swaths of land virtually impassible, especially for follow-on logistics trains that have to keep up with the mechanized front line units.

Once the Spring thaw (Russians call it Rasputitsa) arrives, an invasion will be far more difficult. And it won’t be until late June or early July before the land will dry out enough to make an offensive feasible.

Why in the hell would this be announced in the news of it was remotely true? CNN didn’t announce a week in advance that Iraq was going to invade Kuwait.

No, but in retrospect our CIA/MIC sure did a great job of telegraphing the lead up to, and eventual U.S. invasion of Iraq.

And that is, in my opinion, similar in large brush-strokes to what is going on here.

The American populace primarily(and Europe secondarily, the remainder as tertiary) is being pre-conditioned by way of psychological warfare; propaganda.

The best roads will easily become defensible strong points and eastern European roads aren't nearly as developed as the west. Russian armor and mech infantry will need to be able to move cross country in order to be successful.

I'm quite certain there isn't a single Average Joe/Joanne in the United States who is willing to fight for the sovereignty of Ukraine. Iraq was different because of the 9/11 effect and the burning desire we all had to destroy anything we thought remotely related to terrorism. While "Russian Collusion" has been on the minds of many on the Left, the vast majority of Americans wouldn't give a shite if Russia invades Ukraine tomorrow.

I just read it's been an unusually mild winter and the ground hasn't frozen solid in a lot of places.

This terrifies me. The covid narrative is crashing hard and they desperately need a new talking point.

My thought exactly. I think it may also be why they're exaggerating the "imminence" of it. Then if it doesn't happen they can claim a victory because they solved the crisis.

That'll last about as long as it takes for video of Russian atrocities, of which there will be many, to hit the internet. People may be reluctant for the US to get directly involved, but there will be plenty of support for the harshest possible sanctions, as well as material aid to the Ukrainian partisans, of which there will also be many.

The Ukrainians remember what Lenin and Stalin did to them. They will fight. When their military is destroyed, as will happen fairly quickly, the civilians will keep fighting. The insurgency will at least as bad as the Iraqi insurgency, probably worse. The longer it goes on, the worse it will be for Russia, both on the ground, back home, and in the court of public opinion. Even the Putin fanboys on the poliboard will abandon him.

I don't know if the Ukrainian military will be brushed aside so easily. Maybe in the open terrian they will be swarmed but the urban battles will be brutal.

The Russian conscript army generally has performed poorly outside of 2008 but from what I remember reading the Georgians couldn't even manage to put together a proper rearguard.

Update: US is evacuating everyone from the Ukraine embassy today. Russia is also pulling its diplomats from Ukraine. I’d say this is the final straw, you can’t really come back from this diplomatically.
