re: Runnels School Closing - Not Just High School

I had been hearing rumblings about the financial woes as early as summer of 2013. So none of this is a surprise. Frankly, I am surprised they continued after the flood. Just curious, what skeletons are you referring to?

Yeah we’re in the same boat for one kid.
I would hope they figure out the refund situation sooner than later. However, it appears the shutdown process is about as well organized as the finances have been in the past.
The business end of this school was a one man show from the start to the end and unfortunately it shows.

Where are you guys going to send your kids? I don't have a kid there but know a few people who do.

Do you realize most of the country uses public schools
Which means most kids are receiving progressive programming on a daily basis.
This country is doomed.

Yep. They gladly took my full payment for 2 kids, while telling us that K-8 was in good shape, knowing full-well they were going to shut the school down. They wait until all of the magnet/private school placements are done to drop the bomb on 500 families. Oh, and they'll hold our already-paid $16k making paying for a new school tuition even that more difficult. Completely unfathomable coming from a school that was all about being "kind." I have a feeling this thing is going to get worse when they open up their books.

He refused to open his books to anything. he opposed any action that might improve the reputation of the school that might require someone to look at the books. Several reasons for this 1. how he paid staff - not based on qualifications. There was no rhyme or reason, just his personal preference. 2. Several loans were taken out against the school over the decades that no one could explain the reasoning behind. Many rumors swirled but no real information, however, opening your books to a financial board would have cleared this up. 3. There was never any accountability for financial decisions and any parents who would ask or press were black-balled and ostracized by staff. During the Brandao years the process was moving toward transparency but he nipped that in the bud and blamed it on educational differences - in reality he did not want transparency.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I am curious as to what he was using the school as collateral for. Also, did you use to work there?

I did not work there. I had kids there for about 7 years. Got frustrated when any beneficial change that had parental support was killed by the owner.

Sue for what? They are broke (supposedly).

Property has to be worth something.

We haven’t decided yet. When you break it down on a per grade basis it isn’t like thousands of kids need to find a school. It was a small school across all grade levels.
Some of the magnet programs have opened a second enrollment period so they have spots open.
Part of the fun I guess.

It’s worth nothing to the school as it’s fully mortgaged according to the letter they sent to parents (in the OP).

yikes...didn't read the letter

Exactly. They kept parents in the dark. And the administration STILL doesn't seem to grasp that most people are not sad about the school closing. They are very angry about being hung out to dry for years, then given one final kick in the balls to top it all off. I feel bad for anyone who has tuition tied up in that disaster. There is going to be litigation before all is said and done.

If my kids went to Runnels, I'd check out the Catholic schools. Almost all of them have openings, very good education, and tons of extracurricular opportunities.
