Considering the situation, he probably had a merciful death.

Beheaded by flying rock

quote:

They believe the man, aged in his thirties, was attempting to flee the eruption of Mt Vesuvius when the 300kg rock slammed into him, beheading him and killing him instantly.

Interesting science fact - rocks actually cannot fly so it was probably just a falling rock.

I was there last year. Less than half of the ruins are unearthed . Our guide said they were seeking funding to continue to excavate. It appears they have. Very cool place to visit.

You should take that up with Nick Squires at The Telegraph. He wrote the article.

It looks like it got him right in the face. He'd have probably had better luck running the other way.

I was there a couple years ago also. I was told they will not excavate to much more. They are leaving alot still unearthed to keep it preserved for future Generations.

He actually probably died instantly, so I wouldn't really say it was horrific for him personally.

How do they know he was a Roman?

Maybe he was from India, just visiting relatives?

Was he a giant? Because that little crater he's in looks like what happens when a giant falls in cartoons.
