MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. – A body found Monday floating in the water at the Guntersville Dam was a man who jumped off a bridge in Chattanooga, Tenn., last month, authorities said.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses saw the man jump off the Walnut Street Bridge in Chattanooga Jan. 29. His family reported him missing the same day, authorities said.

The body was spotted floating in the water 19 days later, 122 miles away, according to the sheriff’s office.

Heavy rains that have left flood gates open on the Tennessee River are believed to have allowed the man’s body to travel so far

I wonder what caused this poor soul so much pain that he couldn’t bear it anymore and couldn’t see a light out of the tunnel.

We are all fighting battles. Don’t forget that.

When I was a kid people jumped off that bridge a couple times a year. They would usually fish them out by the next bridge a couple thousand feet down river.

I find it hard to believe the body went through two sets of dam locks without being noticed.

I think it probably got hung up on a barge.

My wife said it went through two locks and I was like... no way. But if you read it it says the spill gates have been open, so he just went over the top. Not through the locks.

Lots of traffic on the river. Hard for a body not to be spotted in that distance.

I have never heard of a body going that far, much less that fast. I honestly think the body got hung up on or between barges.

When it hit Nickajack Lake I don't think the current would have pushed it far.

When you drown you sink, then pop up about three days later when the gases build up. My Dad helped drag the river several times when he was young. Said if they didn't get hung under a fallen tree they would pop up, and sometimes you could smell them before you saw them.

Call me crazy but I don’t feel like that makes it a lot less impressive to be?

Have a buddy that works on a barge. He said one of the first thing he was taught was to never pull a body up onto a barge because it then becames a crime scene and is held up. I’m guessing it got caught in a barge as well.

Nickjack is so wide and slow. That body would have had to stay right in the channel.

Snapping turtles and catfish would have been gnawing on it all the way down. Probably a gory sight to behold when they pulled him out.

122 miles in 19 days is only 6.5 miles a day, or 1/4 of a mile an hour.

The speed isn't crazy at all with the flooding we have had. But the distance is crazy for sure.

Always worry about some hobo body floating by my dock.

Would be a horrible inconvenience to have to deal with that.

I think the removal service is free with those.

Upstream, the uppermost lakes are nearly at summer levels. They've been trying to move water out of Loudon, Watts Bar, etc. whenever they can to allow for some upper lake draw down.

I don't think I've ever seen so many boats out on Cherokee as we saw today around noon time. (OK, we didn't see the boats, just the pickup trucks and their rigs. pretty much filling every available boat launch.)

Do the lake below Watts Bar use booms to catch and keep the floating debris (mostly trees) from clogging the spillways?
