Haha.....so this is what sets a $5,000 watch apart? Yeah, matter of fact, my $400 Citizen has a sapphire crystal, is titanium and has the added benefit of being an Eco-Drive.

You think a Rolex is a depreciating asset?

We were discussing cars in that last response. I really don't have a clue about watches, but I imagine it's only valuable to a particular market of people. There still isn't $5,000 worth of value there in my opinion, either way.

This thread has me washing my favorite NATO bands. They've gotten a little dingy, hope the sweat stains come out.

Nah, maybe not "massive", but it's a shitload of dough for something to TELL YOU THE TIME. There's just not $5,000 worth of value in that.

That’s like your opinion man. I enjoy the craftsmanship and am willing to pay.

In business you'd be surprised what kind of value/return you can get on wearing that $5000 watch. Hell, a lot of you would probably be surprised on what a nice pair of high end shoes can do you for you. People notice that stuff and successful people generally only want to do business with other successful people.

I get where you're coming from, but my life doesn't revolve around projecting status to others. If that helps you do your thing, that's great. There are plenty of people parking a Mercedes out front of their trailer, too.

In business of any kind, I certainly hope you're evaluating your dealings on more than just what your associates are wearing. Me personally, I value the frugal, smart spender.

For what it's worth, I could see spending money on good shoes. That makes a lot more sense to me.

I am shocked to hear this given your posts on the topic so far.

My phone does the exact same thing, as does my 15 year old super reliable Seiko.

And your camo sweatpants do the same thing as a fine pair of suit pants.

Yeah, well......no shame from me. They just don't really matter much to me, personally. Also, almost never wear what I have as I hate the weight of things on my wrist. That titanium Citizen, light as it is, is still more cumbersome than I like, so I wear it very rarely.

C'mon, man. You know these are two very different things you're talking about.

People would immediately notice someone in a meeting wearing sweat pants. It's far less likely that anyone is taking note of the watch brands being worn around the table.

You have no idea. People are looking at what you wear and how you carry yourself. It goes a long way in business. But having owned many high end watches I don't put stock in them when dealing with people. But I will judge the frick out of you if I see you wearing an Apple watch.

You know what goes a whole lot further in business?

Reputation. It trumps what you’re wearing ten fold. Then, you can wear an Apple Watch if you like and people that really matter won’t be concerned over your watch.

I never said reputation doesnt matter but you're severely discounting what a watch can do for networking.

I network a lot, and it’s never come up. People skills are significantly more important to me in networking than watches. It’s less about me, and more about them, and getting them to talk about themselves, not me, and taking a sincere interest as well. That’s the game changer I’m looking for. People will notice you much more when you become interested in them first.

I'll say this: While you're likely right on both points to a degree, I can say how a person carries themself is much more important most times and also more noticeable. I have no lack of confidence and am quite outgoing and personable, and that goes a long way. I can make a friend out of anyone, and people like doing business with "friends". People they trust and can count on.

Is the watch a potential cherry on top? Maybe. I just think confidence and character are more valued. But that's me.

A fine mechanical watch has value because the market simply agrees that it does. It's an old technology, but unique in its pursuit of perfect timekeeping without electricity. Some folks are fascinated by it, some aren't.

At least when the zombies come, I won't have to use a sundial.

Rolex all day.

If you put a Rolex style bracelet on that Omega though? I'd be stuck there all day.
