I can understand why people aren't interested in owning manual wind watches.
You may want to look at the Omega 329.30.44.51.01.001 (yeah I had to look up the reference). It is a Speedmaster Racing but has a lot of the design cues and hands from the Moowatch. It has the automatic 9900 movement with 60 hrs of power reserve. It is a couple of MM larger and is a little thicker IIRC. It cost a little more and is still only 50m water resistance. It is also a 2 register vs a 3 register watch.
Another option is to hunt down one of the Speedmaster Mk40 watches, is uses an ETA 7753 movement and is a little smaller than the Moonwatch but has a similar look. It is a triple calender so it can be a little busy for some. I love this watch and own one. (not my pic) The prices jumped up since the Hodinkee article about the other colorway (was his first real watch). I paid $1300 for mine all in from a guy on WUS 8 years ago, a nice one will run double that now. If you go that route you would have plenty left over to buy a nice dive watch.
As for the water resistance I have no issues swimming with a quality brand with 50m WR. The forums have fits over anything less than 100 or even 200M but Al Jensky from Archer Watch in Canada who is one of the premier Omega independent watchmakers who does excellent restorations says people are out of their minds. He posts as Archer on the various forums and you may be able to search and find where he discusses WR on Watchuseek.
The Omega Seamster 300m chrono would be another that ticks the WR box.
You could pic up a Bulova moon watch and a nice diver too.
Bell and Ross makes or made the V2-94 chronograph which at gray prices should be fairly inexpensive.
Sinn 140 was used on at least one shuttle mission 100m WR and comes without the black coating as well
Tudor BB Chrono 200m 70hr PR
Honestly, I could name dozens more that fit roughly into your criteria but just picked some that have a similar look and maybe a space connection.

Thanks. That is super helpful. The new Speedy chronoscope is intriguing too. What are your thoughts on the JLC and IWC chronograph offerings?

The new Chronoscope is nice but the dial is busy not that I mind a busy dial as I have a Breguet with a snail tachy scale on the dial.
Note sure why it makes me think of this but I would get a Zenith El Primero before the chronoscope.

I own a couple of IWC 7 day Portugieser chornos and like them but I assume you are talking about chronos either in the Pilot or Ingenier family. I like them but haven't owned them, I tend not to gravitate to chronographs UNLESS they don't make a 3 hand version. It isn't universal though because I prefer the PP Nautilus 5980 to the 5711.
I have never owned a JLC chrono but love their watches and movements. Since I don't think we are talking about their dress(y) watches I assume you mean the Polaris chrono. I have never seen one in the steel but they look great in pictures and have the excellent 751H movement. Of all the watches discussed so far JLC has the best finissage and much closer to what you see in Haute Horlogerie.
I understand narrowing down the choices. There are so many great watches especially when you have a nice budget.

Right. I'm looking for a sportish type watch thats versatile enough it won't look completely out of place in a dressy social occasion. Speedy hits most of those parameters IMV but do do some others. Thanks for giving me some pointers

Understand this rec is purely an attempt to live vicariously and curb the desire to buy one and I doubt it will pique you interest.
Since I love SS integrated bracelet sports watches ala the Nautilus, Aquanaut, Overseas and Royal Oak I have been drawn to the Chopard Alpine Eagle. They also make a chrono but the 3 hander is pushing the budget as it is.
I don't expect you to like it, it has just been worming its way around my brain for the last couple of weeks when I thought I had taken enough Ivermectin to kill it.

Interesting concept to have it integrated. I like the blue face

It is the whole design ethos Gerald Genta started with the Royal Oak then the Nautilus and Ingenier. Those watches a very few others existed for 40 plus years then in the last 5 years the Nautilis and Royal Oak because two of the hottest watches in the world and everyone and their brother is making an integrated bracelet SS sports watch. The Chopard is the only one that has caught my interest but for most people it is a lot of money for a watch from a jewelry maison.
These are the modern versions of the original 2 and two of my absolute favorite watches. Bought mine when errbody still thought they were 1970's old man watches. Guess who is laughing now.

I bought this Sub at the Pearl Harbor Navy Exchange in the early 90s when I was in the Marines. Still wear it every day. They also had an Omega Speed master moon watch right beside it. Same price, I believe. $3495.00 out the door.

Been trying to get a Rolex Explorer II from an AD since February. No luck to date.

Yep. Rolex got it right with the thinner lugs and wider bracelet than the previous’11’ model.

The prices on the Subs, GMTs and Daytonas are just getting stupid. Even the Datejust 41’s are getting ridiculous now. At some point this has to stop but I have been saying that for over 2 years now.

Black or Polar? Polar is harder to get. Black EXP IIs are selling for ~1.5 times retail and the Polar dials are selling for about $1,000 more on the grey market.
I am on record saying I think that Rolex is making enough steel Professional models to just about cover demand but the grey market is buying and holding them. The auction market hasn't done the prices any favors since they tend to lift all boats. When someone buys a new green Patek 5711 for 15 fricking times retail you know the world of watches is off-kilter. You have to REALLY want to be first on the block to spend over $500k on a watch that retails for #35,000.
