I too, recently went looking for a beginner road bike. I soon realized the cheaper road bikes didn't shift well and were heavier and slower. I moved my budget upwards considerably. I ended up with a 2014 Raleigh Ravenio with a full carbon frame and 105 rear shifter for $1450. It is MUCH nicer than bikes half its price. Check out Jenson USA and Giant Nerd for good deals on bikes.

I got a Trek Hybrid on Ebay two years ago. Paid less than $200.00. It is one hell of a bike. I love riding it.

I agree with this, but all I'm really getting at is that paying more than $500 for a first bike is like paying more than $200 on your first golf clubs.

ive said it before and i'll say it again..you can always upgrade components piecemeal..but if you get a bone-jarring aluminum frame..you'll always be stuck with a bone-jarring aluminum frame.

for the uninitiated; test ride BOTH a carbon and AL frame and you'll realize on the pavement its like night and day.

I ride aluminum with a carbon fork. I'll be upgrading to full carbon at the end of this year. It's not horrible since the roads I ride are actually pretty good roads. But there's a few area's where the shoulder is older asphalt and is rougher than the main road, and it's definitely uncomfortable if I had to stay on that.

I thought about upgrading my components now and swapping over to a carbon frame, but every LBS basically tells me it would be way more in the long run to do that.

if you're VERY adventurous, its quite possibly aliexpress has name brand carbon frames (cervelo, specialized, etc.) for $500ish per frame.

i've had a couple friends buy these and while they did cut some corners..you're looking at 10% (or less) of the cost of buying from the big brands.

on top of that, many times the factories producing the carbon for those companies are also producing the knockoffs.

in some cases, the design has changed so the old blueprints are thrown out and the plant is simply going off the older carbon frame design.

YMMV and i wouldn't recommend this for a beginner.

alibaba akbhar!!

eta, cippolini carbon frame for $649!!

CIPOLLINI carbon frame

I raced Rouge Roubaix on a Cannondale CAAD10 with Zipp 404 aluminum clinchers this year. Had aluminum bars but carbon seat post (Specialized S-Works Cobble Gobbler) and it was an AMAZING ride. The bike felt so damn good. I raced my Cervelo R3 last year and I'm saying the CAAD10 was a better ride.

Are there shitty aluminum frames? Indeed. Maybe the CAAD10 is an exception. But it's damn nice.

And on the other side there are definitely shitty carbon frames. So buyer beware.

If Capital Schwinn Cyclery (Essen next to Red Stick Sports) is still open, I'd go there. The owner is really cool. If you give him a price, he'll find you what you need for it.

Well I'm not a psychopath. Those are the only ones that would "do anything about it."

And automotive operators hate you all if you're in the middle of the road with your Lance Armstrong spandex shite on and foam aerodynamic helmet on that's half the size of your bicycle. Hollering 3 feet man, gimme 3 feet. I tell ya what, keep riding down the middle of the freakin road and you're going to end up with 6 feet, and a dirt nap.

Well said. Cyclists can bitch all they want about sharing the road, but it doesn't matter how right you are legally if you and your bike are wrapped around the hood of a moving vehicle.

The OP talked about riding in residential areas and on bike paths. Yet the low-IQ rednecks are still here to put their ignorance on display for all.

Not quite man. I realize I won't win any arguments here, I am just speaking from experience that some cyclists don't help themselves in the eyes of motorists when they are riding 25 deep in a peloton down a major thoroughfare during rush hour.

OK what's your point? Nothing to do with OPs question.

How many times have you seen anything like this. There are hundreds of cyclists around me. It's very popular on the roads where I live. In the last 6 months, I've seen cyclist do things only 3 times that I though "that guy's an idiot". One was on a 3 lane highway with no shoulder in a good bit of traffic (but he was training the course for an Ironman the next day). And the other two were not "cyclists" but just dumbasses on bikes. Otherwise I don't see them doing anything outrageous with super large lines of traffic behind them. Yet drivers still get pissy if they have to slow down for 30 seconds until they can pass, so it's these damned crazy cyclists!!!!

I will admit that when I lived in Baton Rouge, there were a few times that cyclists caused problems on River Road by campus. I don't think that's a safe place to ride. The rest of River Road is rural enough to be okay, just not by campus.
