PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon State and the University of Oregon will meet on the football field this Friday. The game is one of the longest running rivalries in college football, but this year it's won't be referred to as the "Civil War."
The decision was made over the summer after officials from both universities heard from current and past athletes.
Joey Harrington, one of the Ducks' top players in history, said he doesn't have an issue with not using the term.
"If a family member or a brother of mine says your words and your actions are hurting me, the first thing I do is listen," Harrington said. "The next thing I do is make a change to correct those actions."
The Civil War involved slavery and the division of America, two things both universities no longer wanted to be associated with.
"We felt like it no longer represented our university at Oregon State University or the University of Oregon or really Oregonians," said Steve Clark, the public information officer for Oregon State University.
"If you have significant opposition to this, you're missing the point," Harrington said. "You need to take a minute to do some self reflection because you're missing the entire point of what's happening right now."

The announcers were just discussing this and mid sentence he cuts back into announcing a play and says "Jefferson cutting up the middle . . . ." I for one was very offended.

In other words, "your opinion doesn't matter and you can go frick yourself, while our opinion should be taken as gospel."

I don't have an issue if people want to change the name of that stupid football game. But you can't turn around and tell people they're the problem if they disagree with you. That is one of the biggest issues in today's society. Shutting out and stigmatizing whole groups of people because of their opinion on a single issue. The whole "my way, or the highway" mentality of everyone these days will never accomplish a damn thing that is meaningful in any way whatsoever.

Most people's lives are generally a shitty existence. Through all the bull shite and monotony, there are a few things here and there that bring us joy. And yet the social justice crowd is singlehandedly doing its best to eliminate all of those joys. These people are evil.

This is a move that all should agree with it. Civil Wars are watershed moments in history and shouldn’t be used to describe something as dumb as a college football game.

If you can begin to make a case for calling it the civil war that extends beyond “but it’s always been” or “liberals are ruing everything” it’d be easier to dismiss his stance.
