Us #AATW Vets refer to him as Jumpin'Jim. He pinned my MSM on me during Division Review with James Lindsey (who also just recently died) in '82 and then he flew on the VIP bird with us alongside Strom Thurmond who he served with in WWII when Strom was in my Regiment, the 325th.

I made a joke on the bird when I said, "Sir, you don't look anything like Ryan O'Neal and General Gavin replied, Son, I was better looking than him when I was his age.

Looking back that was a mere 40 years after their first jump into North Africa, Sicily, etc ..... it probably seemed like WWII was yesterday to them. We thought they were so old.

It's been forty years since he pinned that MSM on me that day .... seems like yesterday to me.

Where did the time go.

Anyways, A Bridge Too Far was/is a great movie about Operation Market Garden. Have actually visited Nijmegen over the years. Been to that bridge, that river .... our 82nd took our bridge.

A friend’s dad was in Operation Market Garden. He was the most decorated officer in the 82nd Airborne - Maggie Megellas. John Ratzenberger (Cliff from Cheers) played him in A Bridge Too Far. He died in 2020 at the age of 103 in 2020.

Another entertainer who was young when I was in my teenage years has passed. Just a reminder of our mortality. It’s hard to watch it happen.

Holy shite I know exactly who he is. Colonel Megellas was a legend. I actually met him several times .... maybe five times in total. First time I met him was in 81 in Houston at the Houston Astro Village at the annual Airborne National Convention. He was actually there paling around with a few of the real Band of Brothers guys including Winters ... that was the year before I was NCO of the Year. THAT was a great convention. Then I met him again in 82 at Division Review the same year General Gavin was honorary CG when General Lindsey had him in. That's when he pinned my MSM.

Then I met Colonel Megellas again in Normandy in '84 for the 40th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion which, if I remember correctly the '04 did not participate in because they were short handed after Anzio but Colonel Maggs was there with some of his buddies. I was brought up from Italy to be on the Honor Guard ... Reagan was there, Margaret Thatcher, other notables representing the allied forces who were part of D-Day. We actually jumped into St Mere Eglise for that celebration.

Those old boys could sure party and tell us great stories.

I guess I'm passing it on now that I'm old.

I ran into him a couple more times at conventions ... one in Charleston, SC and another one in Texas. I had heard he was not doing well at the last Convention I attended around 2015, he was not there. Heard he passed away recently from Covid or some shite he would scoff at.

Maggs was/is a true Airborne Legend, trust me ... you were around greatness. A lot of troops thought he should have one a MoH for Anzio I think it was. He was a fellow Master Blaster except he had THREE frickin gold stars on his Master Wings. Just incredible.

Dude is reputed to have hit on his own daughter once. He was supposedly drunk and didn’t recognize her all gussied up in her makeup and outfit.

That happened at Farrah Fawcett's funeral, in fact.

My son competed along with Col. Megellas’ grandson in martial arts - his grandson is one of the few elite guys in the sport martial arts world - so we’d see him once or twice a year at our team events. He always loved traveling to the tournaments across the country to watch his grandson. At our team dinner each year at World Championships, Maggie would give a little speech to the kids. The first time I heard him speak, you knew you were in the presence of greatness. Even around an age of 100 years old, he just had such a commanding presence in the room. I’d get goosebumps when he spoke.

His book is such an amazing read - a real front lines account of some of the most renown WWII battles. They don’t make many guys like him any more. True American hero. He narrated some of the stuff at the WWII Museum here in New Orleans as well.

I had forgotten all about this movie. My Dad and I went to see it when the Bon Marche' Theater in Baton Rouge first opened. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

You need your eyes checked if you think Ryan O'Neal looked like Paul Newman.
