Wasn’t he doing a signing tour through Covington, Slidell, and Biloxi just last year? Feel like I saw a billboard in Metairie advertising that

Holy shite. He lived here in Kingwood by me. He ran a gym here called Rising Sun Karate. It’s where I started my path in BJJ about 20 years ago. He would come roll with us some although he was a MT/karate guy. Our group was only there about a year before Jason and our head instructor had a falling out so we left. However I would see him all around Kingwood driving his Black H2 or his Porsche. Then he got into MMA and we would see him at fights around Houston. He always had some level of drama around him which is why I was glad we left Rising Sun although deep down I think he was a cool dude, just conflicted I guess. I know he had a young daughter that was the same age as my daughter who is 14. Rest in Peace JDF.

That show was awful.
I’m so glad I grew up before that trash came out.

First Kevin Conroy now Jason David Frank. November is savage to my (and many others) before school and after school FOX shows. JDF was pretty much the face of the franchise.

Yes, it was low budget trash. I was big on TMNT when they came out and just beyond the target range for the Power Rangers when they became big.

I heard with peers (actors or other martial artists) he could be a bit of a dick, but with fans he was apparently extremely humble and welcoming.

When we trained together he never really brought up the Power Ranger thing much. He also had a joint venture with another guy here in Kingwood that ran his boxing classes and was a legit MMA pro locally. They started a brand of MMA clothing called Jesus Didn’t Tap. However they had a falling out too. That was kinda a pattern with him although MMA guys in general have more drama than a group of old women. In fact anybody that really had any dealings with him thought he was a bit sketchy but seriously you hate to hear this kind of news.

I lived in the area and know people who went to Rising Sun Karate.

Isn’t the guy he had a falling out with the guy who started McCusker MMA?

Yep. Seems like he'd roll into the Coast 1-2 times a year to do signings at a local comic book shop.

You're so right. I had the complete set. I wish my mom and never got rid of it. I remember having Voltron on my birthday cake one year.

Yes that was Tom. At that time he was a Blue Belt under Travis Tooke. If you know the background of the beginning of jits in H-town, Travis was one of the first legit BB’s in town. Tom taught at Rising Sun and like I said he got cross threaded with Jason and started his own thing in Kingwood. I was Tom’s first student at Rising Sun but Tom’s a no-gi guy and I spent a year doing that without even earning a stripe on a White Belt so when he left and came to Kingwood I hooked up with another instructor from Kingwood that did nothing but gi. Ironically we would go back to Rising Sun for a while before Jason had a falling out with him and we opened our own place on 1960. That seems like an eternity ago.

So actually Jason had issues with 2 instructors. Like I said, drama followed the guy.

Suicidal wouldn’t be surprising. Pretty depressing grind to eke out a living hosting sparsely attended signings at comic shops in random arse cities.
