Vice grips , 7/16 wrench or socket , torque bars and you can have it done in 20 minutes. It is simple and easy. I did it for a living for a few years. Nothing to it.

I think you're talking about a different type of spring

I think he's got torsion springs. They sit above the garage door. Unlike yours , which hang beside the track on both sides. Whole different animal. Torsion springs are much more dangerous.

I don't think you can even see the springs with the door up...and if you could, there would be a hell of a crash when you loosened the set screw...

Right. I was talking to the other guy who had a different set up than you. Yours are actually easier and quicker to change than the type he was talking about but more dangerous for sure.

Let me help you with this.

From that picture, it is the one on the LEFT that is broken.

See those white lines on the spring that's not broken? Count them. When you put the new springs up and start turning them , you'll want to see the same number of lines. Each line is 1 full turn (4 quarter turns). 16x7 door it looks like , probably 7 full turns per spring.

Keep in mind that the springs are made to be left and right springs. Hopefully they told you this or marked them.

Thanks. That's what I've read. I'm going to paint a white line across the new ones so I can count the turns easily as well.

Yeah they're marked. The guy at overhead door let me know which is which.

Anyone ever have to do this and have any tips? One of the springs broke a few days ago so I get to spend the day replacing them. Seems pretty simple.

Yeah, you probably can do this as you can probably change out a 220 volt breaker box by being careful. Take it from this pretty good handy man, its not worth the potential injury these things can cause. If you do it yourself, at least have someone there to take you to the ER if something goes wrong.

excellent planning...have her prepare the tourniquets....

seriously, I would at least wear safety glasses while winding the spring in case things start flying.

also, get yourself a can of silicone spray lubricant to keep the springs lubricated in the future without dirt sticking to them.
