Rent payment fricked up, WWtOTD?

So today I got a letter from my property manager saying my rent wasn't paid. Went to the front office, showed them the voided check and the receipt from the online payment company they use. She said "well, they sent us a notice today saying the check didn't clear, its on their end." So I call the company and tell them I paid with a check, and that they sent me a receipt confirming it cleared. The guy basically tells me "yeah sorry I don't know why it told you that, but the account number was wrong." So now I'm stuck paying $70 in late fees because they just sent the notice to my property manager today. I know I'm ultimately at fault for putting the number in wrong, but it seems like they should have notified me earlier that something wasn't right instead of telling me it cleared.
tl;dr
Paid rent online, company said it cleared, actually didn't, I have to pay $70 in late fees.

Let me look into it for you. What's your account number?

What do you mean "you put the number wrong?"

Why do you pay rent online through some other company and not through your own bank account?

if the property manager doesn't waive the fee they suck or you must not be a good tenant

why are you still writing checks? No autodraft, they dont take debit cards. Do they have a website where you can make a payment online? This post seems like you're either old or live in some shitty apartments.
ETA: Nevermind, you said you paid online. Carry on then.

The account number was missing a digit when I typed it in for the payment company. The guy said he wasn't sure why it told me it cleared, because it couldn't have with the wrong number. But the receipt told me it cleared anyway
New tenant actually. She told me there was nothing she could do.

so the reality is you put in the wrong account number on purpose in hopes that some other person would get stuck with your rent payment?

Something doesn't add up.

You put in the wrong number, therefore you did not pay your rent and you owe a $70 late fee.
Why is this so hard?

Tell her to get fricked and bring it to court if she wants that late fee, jmo.

I know that, and said so in the original post. I was just getting at the fact that the company told me it was paid when it actually wasn't. If they had brought it up immediately I could've fixed it.

Normally when you pay something like this online, you get a confirmation number or receipt. If you didn't get one, well you're just a dumbass.

The company told you it was paid based on the information they had, which was bad information because you put in the wrong account number.
Its happened to me before on a bill payment before - most people are courteous and understand and will waive the late payment if there has never been a problem. If your property manager won't do it - you really have no choice other than to pay the late payment.
Consider it a lesson learned with a 0 at the end of it. You'll have plenty of them.

Fair enough. I paid the late fee after a little griping.
