A friend's sister in Miami had her identity stolen. She contacted the company she paid to prevent that, and was assigned an agent. From then on, she talked to that agent. But the problem would come back every three or four months.
Finally she called that agent on a day the agent wasn't at the office. The person she talked to had could find no records of her previous calls. None. Nor any file in her name in that agent's system.
It did get straightened out, but we wonder what ever happened to the oh-so-helpful agent.

Anything you have to pay for when it comes to viruses is a scam IMO. Most of the virus/security software that you pay for does nothing but slow down your computer.
If you have windows, microsoft has free security and if you use apple (IOS) there are free virus protect programs available.
For less than $6k she could have bought two new computers, but I would think anyone who is having issues with their computer would call someone they know first. If anything, just reformat the computer.

To be fair, scammers have preyed on older people since the day people started scamming and they have always evolved.
But I do agree, for people who don't really know what they are doing, the scammers have become more "official" looking. Even the spam shite you get in snail mail make their envelops look like something important.

That's terrible. And scary. If some of these people put half the effort into a legitimate job...

In case it wasn't clear, this was a sign someone shouldn't have complete control of their finances anymore.

One of my carpoolers, 38 years old, almost got scammed last week by those fake IRS calls. He had never gotten these robocalls before, so he thought it was legit. We teased him the whole drive home.

Yeah, if they are smart enough to put together these scams, they should be able to at least find a job. I doubt scamming people provides health insurance.
With that said, a lot of them are foreigners living in places where only shitty jobs are available and they make a lot more scamming people (not that them not being able to get a decent paying job justifies them scamming people).

You do realize there is a known subsect of scammers who are moonlighters that work Microsoft tech support by day?
