What do you think about dozens of officers working 1400+ hours of overtime a year, year after year? Do you think that seems legitimate?

There's at least one guy that puts in 2600+ in overtime hours a year and he also has a business that he runs on the side, goes on vacations, and all sorts of activities that you'd expect an active dad to do. I can see working a lot of overtime for weeks or months at a time but It's hard to imagine putting in that many hours every single week year after year. You don't think that seems odd?

All this came out in a story back in 2018 and they stopped releasing the data to the public after that.

I think they choose to work long hours, get little sleep, and miss so many things with their kids and families, but it is their choice.

Some Divisions in the Department are subject to more overtime than others. Take for example DWI enforcement. Those guys make a ton of arrest. Those arrest generate subpoenas to appear in court as a witness. So after working all night long, many of them get off work in the early morning hours, sleep for an hour or two on a cot somewhere, and get back dressed to go sit in a court room for the majority of the day. Rinse, repeat. DWI enforcement is also unique in that most of the overtime hours are paid through State and Federal grants.

Do you enjoy attending any of the local mardi gras parades? Do you enjoy attending Live at 5 downtown or any festivals or 5k runs? LSU football? All of these are paid by overtime.

When a rash of violent crime occurs, additional resources are dedicated to those neighborhoods. Some of those resources are asked to work into the night when the criminal element is active. Again paid by overtime.

Media relations Officers often have to put together press releases in the middle of the night or on weekends to inform the public. Again, paid by overtime.

The list goes on and on.

The public has asked or needed this department to perform a wide range of services in addition to what is already expected, such as calls for service, training, and investigations. Don't cry foul when you ask them to perform additional and they in return seek compensation for their off time.

MARKET VALUE. This is what SWB used tax payer funds to study what was appropriate in pay for police officers in a city this size. She also hired an efficiency study to find areas that could be cut within the department. Those cuts have been made.

We've been doing more with less for years. We've also sacrificed more than others for years. Still showing up, still serving.

It's time to pay up. You cant just pay for and study issues, sometimes you actually have to govern.

You missed my point, entirely.

If OT was spread evenly like your stated $16k, that would be one thing. You and I both know that it isn't. Roughly 115 people brought in *more* than $25k worth of OT in 2019. Which means that the overwhelming majority of BRPD employees hardly brought in shite for OT. It's a department of haves and have nots. The low level guys get fricked while some guys make bank. I would *much* rather see some base pay increase and some tapering off of OT than the insanity that we have now.

Yes or no, the union has a big day so in OT because of seniority?

That's fair and I agree.

Tell the event planners for all of the runs, festivals, and private events to pay their share if that want to host an event. Baton Rouge is a unique municipality that allows public funds for public safety for these events. If you cut those cost down, you would see a more reasonable number.

And while we are at it, just stipulate to the details in any of the police reports for all motion hearings or continuance you guys subpoena us for. Spare me the 6th Right to Face rhetoric. If its going to actually go to trial, we will be there.

How does one work 400 hrs overtime a month? Work 80 hrs a week and it's only 160 hrs of overtime.

I actually have no idea, but my hunch is that’s likely.

I dont know but there are guys doing this (400 hours a month total, including regular time) and at least one of them is doing this all while helping his kid with sports and running a catering business - wife has pics of them on cool vacations. It's not just one month here and there, its averaging 220 hours of OT every month for years and years without any breaks.

A reporter got in trouble and BRPD stopped allowing their pay to be public after that report went out back in 2018.

Nope, nothing sketchy there.

While you were watching a few gas stations burn on CNN, police all around the country not seeing anything were making bank. They wish this would go on forever. Chaos is money.

They pray for a category 5 hurricane or 500 year flood.

I hope anyone that is for abolishing police departments runs into a violent situation where they desperately need the police

I see your point. can you give an example of such a violent situation happening to someone that they have the time and energy to contact the cops, wait for their response, and still be safe when they arrive to do something about the situation?

Hot take warning: BRPD officers should have to live in the parish they serve. Seems like a ton of them live in Livingston Parish.

They pushed that argument the same year they hired the new chief from New Orleans and he moved right into Ascension Parish after taking the job. But you're right, the LP is awash with BRPD units. Can you blame them?

St. George wasn’t going to have their own police department but now it sounds like they can get a bunch of the BRPD best at a bargain price. They should rethink having their own.

Until then we will just have to settle for EBRSO. Most of those dudes I have met have been cool as shite. When they protested on Siegen. Every swinging dick from the SO was out there to keep the peace. I hope we can recruit some of them as well.

Wait.

2,600 hours of OVERTIME per year? As in each week, on top of his standard hours, he says he's working an additional fifty hours per week?

What do cops run, 5x12s? 6x10s? When does he sleep?
