Red Mountain Pass in Colorado hit by massive avalanches

John Denver, as it turns out, was not full of shite.

I wonder what "helicopter avalanche mitigation operations" involve. Are they dropping explosive charges? Are they firing 2.75" rockets? Hellfire missiles?

I always thought the recoiless rifle mounted in the back of a truck was cool. I'd love to watch a helicopter blow up the mountainside.

I was in Breckenridge last week and they were firing those cannons all week. We almost weren’t able to get to the Denver airport due to the avalanches around us

I remember seeing TV show a really long time ago about avalanche control. There was a permanant gun emplacement located at an avalanche prone area. I was a kid from LA and thought that must be the coolest job in the world. Hanging out in the mountains, firing a cannon, and getting to watch avalanches.

Me too brother. Was crazy.

But what a glorious week for skiing!!

The cannons are cool as all hell. We drove from Keystone to Denver one time and the road/interstate was shut down a while for the cannons to do their thing.

So we opened up the van, listened to the missiles, pissed on the side of the road and kept drinking.

Missed our flight home too.

Good times.
